Matthew Judon has some perspective on his return from a season-ending bicep injury for the New England Patriots. Judon’s priorities for the Patriots this season have been clear, from producing his teammates to envisioning the quarterback of the future. In our last opportunity to assess the 2024 season, Judon’s solution was simple. “We’ve got to win games and score to get back into the fold,” Judon said of former Patriots quarterback Cam Newton on “4th and 1.” “Play better defense and keep people off the board. Everyone needs to improve. It’s not just one person. “You can’t blame a person…
Jerod Mayo was a breath of fresh air for the Patriots when he took over as head coach in New England after the team parted ways with Bill Belichick. The Patriots still have a lot of work to do to rebuild their franchise after a 4-13 season that saw them miss the playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons. Kendrick Bourne has been stellar this stretch and may or may not be a part of New England’s next chapter as an upcoming free agent. Regardless of his future, Bourne was positive about Mayo’s chances. In an interview with…
The New England Patriots have hired Brown Bears offensive line coach Michael McCarthy as an offensive assistant, MassLive’s Mark Daniels reports. McCarthy has been the Browns’ offensive line coach for the past five seasons. Prior to coaching at Brown, McCarthy worked in the NFL with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions. He also coached at Tulane, Western Michigan and North Carolina Central before joining Brown State. Since taking the New England Patriots job in January, Jerod Mayo has focused on building a strong coaching staff with assistants. Coaches joining Mayo’s staff include former Buffalo Bills quarterback Alex…
The New England Patriots are in desperate need of a quarterback upgrade, and an opportunity could arise depending on how the Seahawks use Geno Smith. Seattle owes the 33-year-old $12.7 million in base salary next season, a fraction of the $22.5 million he will make in 2024. If Smith is still on the roster, $12.7 million becomes fully guaranteed starting Friday, according to ESPN’s Brady Henderson.Pete Carroll has been a strong advocate for Smith, but it’s unclear how general manager John Schneider and new Seahawks coach Mike McDonald plan to fill the position. Ryan Grubb is the team’s new offensive…
All indications are that Apple’s upcoming Patriots docu-series will provide exciting new details about New England’s storied dynasty. We’ve learned new information about the broken relationship between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Don’t expect Belichick to say anything about pushing Malcolm Butler in Super Bowl LII. The Athletic’s Chad Graff recently premiered the entire 10-part series, which debuts Friday with two episodes. Graf offered some insight into how Belichick answered Wednesday’s question from quarterback Matthew Hamacek about benching Butler. Excerpt from Count’s review:“Matt, we talked about it,” Belichick says without further explanation. This suggests that there is some kind of…
Another day, another test project. But there is a big twist here.Instead of recruiting NFL prospects, we recruit coaches. For the pick order, NFL Yardbarker writers used the order of the 2024 NFL Draft, but we returned the first-round picks from Carolina, Cleveland and Houston, allowing each team to select a head coach. In addition to active NFL team members, college and NFL coaches (including Tennessee’s Mike Vrabel and New England’s Bill Belichick) also joined last year. So stop telling the truth. Enjoy this latest tease. Remember: The current NFL Draft is April 25-27 in Detroit. Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers…
The New England Patriots continue to add to their coaching staff, but several assistant positions remain vacant as of Wednesday morning. Below that is the wide receiver spot, where the Patriots’ last wideout was Troy Brown. The Patriots added former WR Tyquan Underwood as an assistant receivers coach this offseason, but the top position remains unfilled. How that will play out remains to be seen, but the addition of an outsider doesn’t necessarily mean the end of Brown’s time with the organization. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the 52-year-old “has the option to stay if he wants to.” However, it is…
As a wise man once said, it takes two to make things right, and that has been the case with the Patriots, as there have been many duos throughout the team’s history that have made things work. But it’s great. Football is the ultimate team sport, and while it takes a full 11-man unit to consistently win games, we present our Valentine’s Day collection of the best Patriots duos that have made a lasting impact on the franchise. We knew Tom Brady would be on this list, but the hard part was assigning him just one partner. It’s hard to…
The Boston Bruins will look to start their winning streak and extend it to seven games on Saturday against the Washington Capitals at TD Garden. Boston currently faces scheduling challenges that require 12 of its 14 games to be at home, with the games coming against multiple Stanley Cup contenders. Anthony Richard will make his franchise debut this week after Boston rookie Matthew Poitras was called up following season-ending shoulder surgery, Bruins coach Jim Montgomery announced. He replaced Oscar Steen on the fourth line, marking the only change since the Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.Jeremy Swaeman returned to…
The New England Patriots are almost certain to select a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, but they’re not the only team looking for their signal-caller of the future. It’s amazing how competitive they can be. The Patriots have the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders in the draft, both organizations likely to select a quarterback. The Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders are also among those in need of help at the position, though some not directly. But that’s a very large number of teams vying for a short list of prospects. Once…
