Jerod Mayo was a breath of fresh air for the Patriots when he took over as head coach in New England after the team parted ways with Bill Belichick. The Patriots still have a lot of work to do to rebuild their franchise after a 4-13 season that saw them miss the playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons.
Kendrick Bourne has been stellar this stretch and may or may not be a part of New England’s next chapter as an upcoming free agent. Regardless of his future, Bourne was positive about Mayo’s chances. In an interview with former Patriots quarterback Cam Newton on the 4th and 1st show, Bourne noted that Mayo’s key attribute is that he is closer in age to the players than previous quarterbacks, which gives him allows him to maximize his potential for the Patriots.
“Mayo can answer,” Bourne said. “Maybe he’ll give it back.” The reason they (Patriots) can make a comeback is because he understands youth culture (better) than the Bills.
Bourne continued, “I think it’s a good fit for both of us. He knows what young upstarts are coming. I think he knew them better than Bill. Bill was stuck in his tracks.
I feel like I’ll make it. … I think he’s going to be a player’s coach.
Bourne brought a personal energy to the Patriots during his three seasons in New England that he hopes to see again under Mayo. If we re-sign, Mayo and the Patriots, who could join Vaughn, enter 2024 with a clean slate and an opportunity for the future.
