Kentucky basketball received major offseason news as Malachi Moreno officially announced he is withdrawing from the 2026 NBA Draft and returning to Lexington for his sophomore season.
The talented Kentucky center reportedly canceled his remaining NBA team workouts before the May 27 withdrawal deadline and informed head coach Mark Pope of his decision, according to On3. Shortly after the news broke, Kentucky Men’s Basketball celebrated Moreno’s return on social media with the message: “Right where he belongs.”
Moreno had generated significant NBA interest following a strong freshman campaign, with some projections placing him as a possible late first-round selection. Despite the draft buzz, the Georgetown, Kentucky native has decided another season in college is the best move for his development.
During his freshman year, Moreno quickly became one of Kentucky’s most dependable frontcourt players. He started 30 of the Wildcats’ 36 games while averaging 7.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. He also impressed with his efficiency, shooting 58.2 percent from the field while appearing in every game this past season.
His return is a massive boost for Mark Pope and the Wildcats heading into next season. Moreno’s size, rim protection, rebounding, and experience now give Kentucky another proven piece in what is expected to be a highly competitive SEC race.
Before arriving at Kentucky, Moreno was one of the state’s top high school prospects at Great Crossing High School, where he built a reputation as one of the best young big men in the region.
Now, instead of heading to the NBA just yet, Moreno will have another opportunity to raise his draft stock while helping Kentucky chase a big season in Lexington.
