Kentucky fans have spent the last several weeks anxiously waiting for one thing: Malachi Moreno’s final NBA Draft decision.
But just when Big Blue Nation thought the situation was beginning to calm down, a new wave of NBA buzz completely changed the conversation.
After initially being viewed as a possible second-round pick — or even an undrafted developmental prospect — Moreno has suddenly started appearing in late first-round conversations across multiple draft circles. The dramatic rise caught many Kentucky fans off guard, especially considering how uncertain his draft stock looked only weeks ago.
Now, some NBA scouts and analysts reportedly believe Moreno’s upside could be enough to convince a team to take a gamble earlier than expected.
That’s the bombshell nobody in Lexington saw coming.
The 7-footer showed flashes throughout his freshman season at Kentucky, averaging 7.8 points and 6.3 rebounds while displaying strong defensive instincts and long-term potential. However, most evaluators believed Moreno needed another college season to polish his offensive game, improve consistency, and physically develop before becoming a true first-round prospect.
That’s why the recent draft momentum has created so much confusion.
Some around college basketball aren’t fully buying the sudden rise.
CBS Sports analyst Isaac Trotter recently suggested the growing first-round buzz may be more smoke than reality, hinting that Moreno’s camp could simply be generating leverage and attention during the pre-draft process.
“I think it’s a bluff,” Trotter said during an ESPN Louisville appearance.
“I don’t think Malachi Moreno has proven enough to have a promise.”
Still, the growing NBA interest is impossible to completely ignore.
Several teams reportedly remain intrigued by Moreno’s combination of size, touch, mobility, and long-term upside. In today’s NBA, franchises are constantly searching for athletic big men they can develop over time — and Moreno fits that mold perfectly.
For Kentucky fans, though, the situation creates mixed emotions.
On one hand, hearing Moreno’s name connected to the first round is exciting validation of his talent. On the other hand, it increases the fear that Kentucky could lose one of its most important frontcourt pieces before Mark Pope’s second season even begins.
If Moreno returns, many believe he could become one of the breakout stars of college basketball next season. Another year in Lexington would likely allow him to expand his offensive game, gain confidence, and potentially enter the 2027 NBA Draft as a much safer first-round selection.
But if the current momentum continues, the pressure to stay in the draft may only grow stronger.
Either way, the clock is ticking fast.
The NBA Draft withdrawal deadline is set for May 27 at 11:59 PM ET — and until Moreno officially announces his decision, Kentucky fans may be in for several more stressful days.
