The Kentucky Wildcats received a major offseason boost on Monday after Washington transfer Franck Kepnang officially received clearance to play next season in Lexington.
Mark Pope and the Wildcats had been searching for frontcourt depth, especially at backup center, and they may have found exactly what they needed. Kepnang, who is entering what will be his seventh and final season of college basketball, needed a waiver because of multiple injury-shortened years during his career. That waiver has now been approved, meaning the experienced big man is officially set to suit up for Kentucky next season.
For Big Blue Nation, the news comes at a critical time.
While Kepnang’s eligibility gives Kentucky another important piece in the paint, uncertainty continues to grow surrounding Malachi Moreno’s NBA Draft decision. Moreno has reportedly impressed during pre-draft workouts, and his stock appears to be rising quickly as the NBA Draft Combine continues in Chicago.
Adding even more intrigue, Moreno decided not to participate in the 5-on-5 scrimmages at the combine — often viewed as a sign that a player already feels confident about his draft positioning. Multiple reports now suggest he could be pushing into late first-round territory, making his decision much tougher for Kentucky fans hoping he returns to college basketball.
If Moreno ultimately stays in the draft, it would leave a major hole in Kentucky’s frontcourt plans heading into next season. However, the addition of Kepnang at least gives Pope some stability and experience inside while the program waits for Moreno’s final call.
The NBA Draft withdrawal deadline is quickly approaching on May 27, and many around Big Blue Nation now believe the situation could truly go either way.
Meanwhile, Kentucky fans continue debating the outcome online, with many hoping Moreno decides to return for one more season in blue and white alongside Kepnang.
One thing is clear: the Wildcats’ entire frontcourt outlook may hinge on what Moreno decides next.
