Big Blue Nation spent the last few days celebrating the addition of Franck Kepnang, but Mark Pope knows Kentucky’s offseason work may not be finished just yet.
After securing the talented big man to strengthen the Wildcats’ frontcourt depth, Pope quickly shifted attention toward what many inside the program already believe is the most important remaining storyline of the offseason: Malachi Moreno’s NBA Draft decision.
Kepnang’s commitment gave Kentucky a major boost. The experienced center brings size, physicality, and rim protection to a roster that desperately needed more frontcourt stability. Fans immediately viewed the move as another sign that Pope is building one of the deepest teams in the country heading into next season.
But despite the excitement surrounding Kepnang, Pope understands there’s still one giant question hanging over the program.
Will Malachi Moreno return to Lexington?
The Kentucky native has continued testing the NBA Draft waters while seeing his stock rise during the pre-draft process. Reports that Moreno chose not to participate in 5-on-5 scrimmages at the NBA Draft Combine only intensified speculation surrounding his future.
Some fans took that as a sign Moreno may already have promises from NBA teams. Others believe he’s simply gathering feedback before deciding whether another season under Pope could help elevate him even further.
Either way, Kentucky is waiting.
Pope has reportedly made retaining Moreno one of the program’s top priorities this offseason, and it’s easy to understand why. Moreno is viewed as one of the Wildcats’ most valuable returning pieces because of his versatility, size, shot-blocking ability, and long-term upside.
Losing him this late in the offseason would completely change Kentucky’s rotation plans.
That’s part of why Kepnang’s commitment mattered so much. It gives Kentucky insurance in the frontcourt while also providing flexibility depending on Moreno’s final choice. If Moreno returns, the Wildcats suddenly look loaded with size and depth capable of competing with anyone in college basketball.
If he stays in the draft, however, Pope may be forced to rethink parts of the roster heading into the season.
The situation feels very similar to the Otega Oweh drama Kentucky fans experienced last offseason. BBN spent weeks anxiously waiting before ultimately getting good news when Oweh returned to Lexington.
Now fans are hoping history repeats itself.
Moreno’s potential NBA future is impossible to ignore. Scouts continue to fall in love with his ceiling, and every positive report only increases the pressure surrounding his decision.
Still, there’s also a strong belief that another season at Kentucky could allow him to dominate college basketball, improve his draft position even further, and become one of the faces of the sport under Pope.
For now, though, everything remains uncertain.
Kentucky may have solved one major offseason need with the addition of Franck Kepnang, but according to Pope, the Wildcats’ next priority is crystal clear.
All eyes are now on Malachi Moreno.
