Kentucky’s biggest weakness last season was hard to ignore. The Wildcats struggled badly whenever injuries hit the point guard position, and it completely disrupted the offense at key moments throughout the year. Mark Pope now appears determined to make sure that problem never happens again — and new assistant coach Mo Williams believes he already has the solution in Zoom Diallo.
During a recent appearance on the UK Sports Network, Williams spoke confidently about what Diallo could bring to Lexington after transferring from Washington. The former NBA star didn’t hold back when discussing his expectations for Kentucky’s new floor general.
“Veteran kid, obviously been on this level, played on this level, ready for this moment,” Williams said. “I expect him to be really, really good for us.”
But Williams went even further than that.
“I expect him to be in a position where they’re talking about him at the end of the season on one of these All-SEC teams,” he added. “I expect huge dividends from Zoom. I think he’s gonna be terrific for us.”
That kind of praise is already creating major excitement around Big Blue Nation.
Diallo enters Kentucky after a strong sophomore season at Washington where he averaged nearly 16 points, 4.5 assists, and close to four rebounds per game. His size immediately stands out for SEC basketball. At 6-foot-4, he brings a physical presence Kentucky lacked at times in the backcourt last season.
While his outside shooting still needs improvement, Diallo’s ability to attack the basket, create offense, and defend with strength gives Kentucky a completely different look at point guard. His downhill style could become one of the biggest weapons in Mark Pope’s system this season.
Last year, Kentucky often found itself forced into uncomfortable lineup situations because of injuries and depth concerns. Jaland Lowe battled health issues, while Denzel Aberdeen had to handle responsibilities outside his natural role. Freshman Jasper Johnson also took on major minutes earlier than expected.
This time, the Wildcats appear far more prepared.
Diallo is expected to lead the backcourt, while Alex Wilkins and freshman Mason Williams provide additional depth behind him. On paper, it may be the strongest point guard room Mark Pope has had since arriving in Lexington.
There’s also growing belief that Diallo still hasn’t reached his ceiling. After making a major jump between his freshman and sophomore seasons at Washington, Kentucky’s coaching staff believes another leap could be coming in year three.
If that happens, the Wildcats may finally have the steady backcourt leader needed to compete deep into March.
BBN already loves the talent on this roster, and if Zoom Diallo lives up to the expectations Mo Williams just set, Kentucky’s ceiling could become much higher than many expected.
