Big Blue Nation knows this feeling all too well. Kentucky fans spent months waiting on major recruiting decisions in the past, and now Mark Pope’s latest offseason pursuit has Wildcats fans refreshing their phones once again.
This time, the spotlight is on two elite targets: five-star reclassification candidate Ryan Hampton and Iowa State transfer star Milan Momcilovic. Kentucky appears heavily involved with both players, but there’s growing belief that the Wildcats may ultimately land only one of them.
According to recruiting insider Jacob Polacheck, Kentucky is firmly in the race for Hampton alongside programs like SMU, LSU, Nebraska, Florida State, and Texas. Hampton’s father recently hinted that NIL opportunities, development, and playing time will all play major roles in the decision-making process.
When asked which school currently has the strongest NIL offer on the table, Hampton’s father responded with a telling answer:
“Think about it.”
That response immediately got Kentucky fans talking.
Hampton, a dynamic 6-foot-6 prospect, is viewed as a player capable of stepping into Kentucky’s wing position right away. While he’s often labeled as a shooting guard, his size and versatility make him an ideal fit at the three spot in Mark Pope’s system.
At the same time, Kentucky continues to pursue Momcilovic, one of the top available transfers in college basketball. The talented forward is known for his elite shooting ability and offensive versatility — traits that would fit perfectly into Pope’s spacing-heavy offense.
The challenge for Kentucky may come down to finances and roster construction. Adding either player would likely require a major investment, and many around the program believe the Wildcats could be forced to choose between the proven college star and the high-upside five-star freshman.
For now, the timeline remains unclear.
A clearer picture could emerge near the NBA Draft withdrawal deadline on May 27, when several roster dominoes across college basketball are expected to fall. There has been growing buzz connecting Momcilovic to Kentucky, but the Wildcats’ continued aggressive push for Hampton suggests nothing has been finalized behind the scenes.
The good news for Kentucky fans is that either player would instantly strengthen the roster.
Momcilovic brings experience, elite perimeter shooting, and a polished offensive game. Hampton, meanwhile, offers explosive long-term potential and the type of athletic upside that could make him a future star on both ends of the floor.
For Mark Pope, landing either recruit would be considered a massive offseason victory.
But if Kentucky somehow misses on both targets, the conversation around the Wildcats’ roster could shift very quickly from excitement to concern.
For now, Big Blue Nation waits yet again.
