The first live recruiting period of the summer brought plenty of attention to Memphis, but for Kentucky Wildcats fans, the biggest storyline centered around Mark Pope and the aggressive recruiting approach his staff showed throughout Nike EYBL Session II.
After a disappointing 2026 recruiting cycle that included missing out on elite names like Tyran Stokes, many around college basketball questioned whether Kentucky could still consistently compete for the nation’s top high school stars under Pope.
This weekend felt like a response to those doubts.
From the moment Pope arrived in Memphis alongside assistant coach Mo Williams, Kentucky’s staff made it clear they were targeting elite-level talent across multiple classes. The Wildcats weren’t simply making appearances — they were deeply engaged in evaluating some of the biggest names in grassroots basketball.
Among the top prospects Kentucky monitored were CJ Rosser, Marcus Spears Jr., Ryan Hampton, Paul Osaruyi, Beckham Black, and rapidly rising guard Chase Lumpkin.
One of the most notable moments came when Pope and Williams sat courtside to watch Lumpkin battle Osaruyi in a highly anticipated matchup featuring two major Kentucky targets. Lumpkin, who has seen his stock skyrocket in recent months, continues to generate serious buzz nationally, and Kentucky appears determined to stay heavily involved in his recruitment.
The Wildcats also spent time evaluating five-star guard Ryan Hampton, who is widely viewed as a potential reclassification candidate into the 2026 class. If that happens, Kentucky could become a major player depending on future roster developments and NBA Draft decisions.
Assistant coach Cody Fueger also handled separate evaluations during the event, including watching top-ranked point guard Beckham Black, the younger brother of former Anthony Black.
Another fascinating stop for Kentucky involved 2029 phenom JJ Crawford, son of former NBA star Jamal Crawford. Though still extremely young, Crawford is already viewed as one of the most talented long-term prospects in the country.
Perhaps the loudest statement of all came when Pope joined several powerhouse coaches courtside to watch elite 2028 guard Colton Hiller. Widely viewed as a future contender for the No. 1 ranking in his class, Hiller attracted attention from some of the biggest names in college basketball, including John Calipari, Nate Oats, Shaka Smart, and Buzz Williams.
For Kentucky fans, this weekend wasn’t just about watching recruiting updates roll in. It was about seeing a coaching staff that appears fully committed to re-establishing Kentucky as a dominant force on the recruiting trail.
And based on the energy surrounding the Wildcats in Memphis, many believe this may only be the beginning.
