Liverpool head to Arsenal today in one of the biggest Premier League games of the season so far. Victory in the 4.30pm kick-off at the Emirates Stadium would move the second-placed Reds back to the top of the table and seven points clear of their third-placed opponents.
Graeme Souness, the Liverpool great, believes his old club have the perfect chance to do that given Arsenal have so many injury concerns. They could be without as many as seven players for the match.
However, the Reds are not at full strength either. New head coach Arne Slot will be without five members of his squad for the Sky Sports-live clash.
And the Dutchman, who has led Liverpool to a club-record 11 wins from their opening 12 games of the campaign, will want them back as soon as possible given the hectic nature of the fixture list.
After this afternoon’s visit to the Gunners, the Reds head to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before welcoming the same opponents to Anfield next Saturday in the Premier League. Further home fixtures follow, against Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen and Aston Villa, before the final international break of the year.
And, ahead of that run of games, we take a look at Slot’s injury list and potential return dates…
Federico Chiesa
Injury: Unspecified.
Federico Chiesa has made just three appearances since his shock summer switch from Juventus and has sat out the last four matches either side of the international break.
But Slot confirmed in his press conference to preview the Arsenal showdown that the Italy international winger will soon be back in training.
If he comes through those sessions unscathed, Chiesa could return to the matchday squad in midweek.
Possible return date: Brighton & Hove Albion (A), Wednesday, October 30, Carabao Cup
Conor Bradley
Injury: Unspecified.
Conor Bradley was a shock omission from the squad named for last Sunday’s 2-1 home triumph over Chelsea given he had been in action for Northern Ireland over the international break.
The young right-back also missed the 1-0 Champions League win over RB Leipzig in Germany in midweek.
It is understood Bradley is carrying a knock, rather than an injury, which he picked up while playing for his country. But like Chiesa, he could return on Wednesday.
Possible return date: Brighton & Hove Albion (A), Wednesday, October 30, Carabao Cup
Diogo Jota
Injury: Rib.
Diogo Jota has been unable to train since hurting his ribs against Chelsea. The striker was hauled down by Tosin Adaraiboyo in an incident that contained similarities to the one that saw William Saliba dismissed for Arsenal in their 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth the previous night. However, Adaraiboyo escaped with a yellow card.
Jota, however, was not so lucky and had to come off with an injury that will keep him out for at least two matches, although a timeframe has not yet been put on his return.
Possible return date: Unknown.
Harvey Elliott
Injury: Foot.
The fractured foot Harvey Elliott suffered while on England Under-21 international has kept the midfielder sidelined since September.
The visit of Chelsea had long been pencilled in as a potential return date. But Elliott did not feature in that game or the one in midweek against RB Leipzig.
It’s clear that Liverpool have no intention of rushing the 21-year-old back to action.
Possible return date: Unknown.
Alisson Becker
Alisson Becker is out for a minimum of six weeks after sustaining a new hamstring injury in 1-0 success at Crystal Palace on October 5.
Slot gave an update on the goalkeeper on Friday. He said: “Alisson is progressing well, like we expected, but it is not a short-term recovery so it is always difficult to judge. The best way to judge an injury is at the end and he is not there yet. Don’t expect him to be in against Brighton [next week].”
Possible return date: Southampton (A), Premier League, Sunday, November 24.
