Kentucky basketball continued reshaping its roster for the 2026–27 season on Saturday with a major addition from the NCAA transfer portal.
Alex Wilkins, a standout freshman guard from Furman, announced his commitment to the Wildcats via his personal Instagram account, giving Mark Pope’s program another proven scorer and playmaker as offseason roster construction gains momentum in Lexington.
Wilkins arrives at Kentucky after an impressive debut season in the Southern Conference, where he quickly established himself as one of the league’s most productive young guards. As a freshman, he led Furman in both scoring and assists, showcasing a well-rounded offensive game that made him the focal point of the Paladins’ attack.
He averaged 17.8 points and 4.7 assists per game, numbers that reflect both his scoring ability and his role as a primary creator. Wilkins also displayed efficiency as a high-volume shooter, connecting on 46% of his field goal attempts (220-of-478). His 220 made field goals led the entire Southern Conference, underscoring just how central he was to Furman’s offense throughout the season.
Beyond scoring, Wilkins showed consistency and poise at the free-throw line, converting 82.4% of his attempts (117-of-142). That mark ranked third-best in the conference, further highlighting his reliability in late-game situations and his ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
For Kentucky, Wilkins represents more than just another transfer addition—he brings a combination of shot creation, perimeter scoring, and playmaking that could immediately impact the Wildcats’ backcourt rotation. His ability to operate both as a scorer and facilitator gives Mark Pope flexibility in how he structures his guard play, especially in lineups that require dynamic offensive spacing.
Wilkins’ commitment also continues what has been an active offseason for Kentucky as Pope works to retool the roster through the portal. With multiple moving pieces still expected before the roster is finalized, the addition of a high-usage guard like Wilkins signals Kentucky’s intent to add proven production rather than relying solely on projections.
While expectations will naturally rise in Lexington, Wilkins arrives with a track record of handling a significant offensive load at the collegiate level. His transition to the SEC will be one of the key storylines to watch as he adapts to a faster, more physical style of play.
Kentucky fans won’t have to wait long to see how he fits into the bigger picture, as offseason developments continue to shape what could be a significantly reshaped Wildcats roster heading into next season.
