Liverpool has made an impressive start to the season under new manager Arne Slot.
The 45 year old Dutchman has quickly instilled a fresh sense of purpose in the squad.
With key players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the team has shown the quality and consistency needed to challenge for the Premier League title.
Slot’s tactical approach and player management have helped Liverpool build early momentum.
But as many believe, squad depth and maintaining player fitness will be vital in determining their success home and abroad this campaign.
What did Paul Merson say?
Football pundit Paul Merson recently weighed in on Liverpool’s upcoming clash against Nottingham Forest.
While Merson believes Liverpool can secure the victory, he acknowledged the potential challenges ahead, especially regarding the squad’s depth.
“If they keep all their players fit, and I said this from day one, I believe they have a chance of winning the league,” Merson said via Sportskeeda.
However, he cautioned that any significant injuries could create problems for Slot’s side, highlighting Liverpool’s lack of depth compared to title rivals Manchester City.
“If you look at Manchester City, they did not have Kevin De Bruyne or Erling Haaland at times last season and they still won it.
“Unfortunately, Liverpool don’t have that type of luxury in squad depth.”
Merson also praised the performances of Ryan Gravenberch, saying, “Ryan Gravenberch has been outstanding so far this season, but he has to keep producing these performances.
“When you’re a player like him, you also thrive due to the players in front of you.
“And he definitely has a dream front-three in front of him at Liverpool.”
Addressing the contract situations of Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold, Merson expressed surprise at how long the club has allowed them to run down.
“I’m a bit surprised Liverpool have allowed their contracts to run down this far,” he said, while also acknowledging the club’s stance:
“If Liverpool don’t win the league this season with these players, they won’t win it next year either.”
Despite the uncertainty, he encouraged fans to appreciate their presence, adding, “Just enjoy these three footballers because they are unbelievable.”
Merson also predicted that Liverpool would end up 2-0 winners against Nottingham Forest at Anfield later today.
