The Reds are back in Premier League action this weekend but Arne Slot may have one or two fitness issues to deal with following the first international break of the season
Liverpool return to domestic duties on Saturday with the visit of Nottingham Forest as Arne Slot searches for a fourth consecutive Premier League win.
The Reds have been relatively injury-free in the early part of the 2024-25 campaign, allowing the new manager to remain unchanged for the last two fixtures, although there is a chance that luck could run out ahead of this weekend.
With some players returning as late as Thursday from international duty, most notably Liverpool’s South American contingent, Slot may have no choice but to swap one or two things around in order to keep things as fresh as possible.
With this in mind, here is the latest injury news from Anfield and possible return dates for members of Slot’s squad as Liverpool looks to continue its 100 per cent winning start in the Premier League this weekend.
Alexis Mac Allister
Reds midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is currently away on international duty with Argentina and starred in its victory over Chile on Thursday by grabbing the opening goal in a 3-0 win. However, it came just a day after La Albiceleste manager Lionel Scaloni claimed the 25-year-old hadn’t trained due to muscle overload.
Scaloni told TyC Sports that Mac Allister was “in pain”, yet the former Brighton man was named in the starting lineup nonetheless. However, he was eventually hauled off after 79 minutes after sustaining an adductor injury during the match, later causing him to sit out preparations for Tuesday’s clash with Colombia.
Mac Aliister has since dismissed any concerns over his fitness by claiming he is “getting ready for what’s coming” in a post on Instagram ahead of the game, although a nervous wait will ensue between now and the weekend as to whether he will be fit enough to face Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Curtis Jones
Curtis Jones has been left out of Liverpool’s last two matchday squads after picking up a “minor muscle issue” in training at the end of last month, although no specific time scale was given for his eventual return.
The injury wasn’t thought to be too serious, however, and there is hope the 23-year-old might be able to return to action this weekend after Slot previously confirmed that “he is not going to be out for a long time” prior to the 3-0 victory over Manchester United on September 1.
Having had almost three weeks to recover since picking up the injury, Jones appears likely to feature in the matchday squad against Nottingham Forest, with further updates from Slot expected in the coming days.
