Kylian Mbappe has hailed the impact of Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate in the France squad.
Raphael Varane retired from international football after the 2022 World Cup, and Mbappe says Konate has been a perfect replacement for the Manchester United star:
“Super player and super guy. There’s a pretty crazy thing about him; on the field, he’s an absolute beast who you don’t want to cross, but outside, he’s a joy – a very cheerful and friendly guy. He’s really fitted into the group (France squad) very quickly.”
“It’s like he has been here for 10 years, but he arrived two years ago. It is one of his greatest strengths, beyond the footballer who is constantly growing. He takes on importance in the group, he does not hesitate to speak. He is really good.”
“He took the place of Raphael Varane in central defence, a position with a lot of competition where we have a brilliant talent pool in France. We are very happy to have him with us.”
Konate has been favoured over an Arsenal player
France manager Didier Deschamps is clearly a big fan of the 25-year-old as well, having started him in 5 of Les Bleus’ 8 European Championship qualifiers.
Some in England have questioned Konate being picked ahead of Arsenal’s William Saliba, who is expected to be named on the bench for France’s first Euro 2024 group-stage match.
Konate has been tipped to line up alongside Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano in the centre of defence against Austria on Monday.
Despite Mbappe’s praise for Konate, he could well have more competition for his place next season. Joel Matip’s departure means a replacement will need to be found.
There is also a decent chance that the new signing will get the nod ahead of Konate if the Frenchman’s injury problems persist into next season.
