What once looked like a major boost for Kentucky Wildcats fans is now quickly fading away.
Following serious discussion surrounding the NCAA’s proposed 5-in-5 eligibility rule, many across Big Blue Nation believed senior guard Otega Oweh could benefit and make a surprise return to Lexington for one more season. That hope only grew stronger after comments from Derrick Morton sparked major buzz among Kentucky supporters.
Now, that dream appears to be finished.
Recent reports suggest that seniors from the 2025–26 season will not be grandfathered into the new eligibility rule, which would leave Oweh ineligible for another year. If that decision stands, Kentucky will officially have to move on without one of its most important players from last season.
That creates a major challenge for head coach Mark Pope as he works to finalize next season’s roster.
At this point, it may truly be Tyran Stokes or bust.
The five-star recruit remains Kentucky’s top target and could immediately become the star presence on the wing if he commits to the Wildcats. With Oweh likely no longer an option, the pressure surrounding Stokes’ decision becomes even greater.
Kentucky can still make additional roster moves, but replacing Oweh’s scoring, leadership, and overall impact will be extremely difficult. Pope and his staff may continue exploring transfer portal options, yet much of the spotlight now shifts toward landing elite talent to complete the roster.
At the same time, NIL continues to reshape the college basketball landscape. ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony recently noted that only 71 players entered the 2026 NBA Draft early-entry pool, a sharp drop from 106 last year and far below the 363-player peak in 2021. More stars are choosing to stay in college, creating both opportunities and complications for major programs like Kentucky.
Right now, one thing is becoming clear: Otega Oweh likely won’t be returning, and Kentucky’s next major move may depend entirely on Tyran Stokes.
