Kentucky basketball opened its 2026-27 season with an impressive 85-57 victory over Manhattan, but beyond the comfortable win, one player may have given Mark Pope another reason to be excited about his team’s potential.
While much of the preseason attention centered on high-profile additions like Milan Momcilovic and the impressive potential of Alex Wilkins, Kentucky’s season opener offered an opportunity for other players to make their presence felt.
And one performance that deserves attention came from Alex Wilkins.
The former Furman standout entered the season with plenty of expectations after an impressive freshman campaign. His scoring ability, athleticism, and potential made him one of the most intriguing additions to Pope’s roster. However, questions remained about whether he could translate those qualities into consistent production at the high-major level.
Against Manhattan, Wilkins showed why Kentucky fans should be excited.
One particularly encouraging aspect of his performance was his defensive activity. Wilkins recorded seven steals, an impressive number that demonstrated his ability to influence the game without relying entirely on scoring.
That is an important development for a player whose defensive consistency had been questioned during the preseason.
Kentucky needs players who can contribute on both ends of the floor, especially in a competitive SEC environment. Wilkins showing that kind of defensive energy could make him even more valuable to Pope’s rotation.
Offensively, his scoring potential is already well established. He possesses the ability to create his own shot, attack defenders, and stretch the floor with his improving three-point shooting.
At this stage, consistency remains the biggest challenge. There will be moments when his decision-making and inexperience become noticeable, but that is part of the development process for a young player adjusting to a new level of competition.
What makes Wilkins particularly interesting is the possibility that Kentucky has not yet seen his best basketball.
With Zoom Diallo providing experience at point guard and Mason Williams offering another talented backcourt option, Pope has several ways to utilize his guards. Wilkins could become an important offensive weapon while continuing to develop defensively.
The Manhattan victory was only the beginning, and one performance does not guarantee a breakout season. However, seven steals in a season opener is certainly something worth noticing.
If Wilkins continues bringing that defensive intensity while delivering offensively, he could become one of the most important players in Kentucky’s rotation.
Pope might have found a hidden gem, and Big Blue Nation could be watching the beginning of something special.
The next opportunity comes Friday against James Madison.
