Kentucky basketball opened its 2026-27 season with an impressive 85-57 victory over Manhattan, but one player’s performance stood out and could have a major impact on what the Wildcats accomplish this season.
Milan Momcilovic wasted little time showing Kentucky fans what he brings to Mark Pope’s team.
The Iowa State transfer delivered a spectacular debut, finishing with a game-high 24 points while shooting 8-of-12 from the field and an outstanding 6-of-9 from three-point range.
It was an impressive shooting display that immediately highlighted why Momcilovic could become one of the most important players on Kentucky’s roster.
Coming into the season, the Wildcats needed players who could consistently knock down outside shots and create problems for opposing defenses. Momcilovic showed against Manhattan that he could provide exactly that.
His ability to stretch the floor gives Pope another dangerous offensive weapon. Defenses will have to respect his shooting ability, making it more difficult to concentrate all their attention on Kentucky’s other offensive threats.
That could create additional opportunities for players such as Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, who finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
What makes Momcilovic particularly valuable is that he does not necessarily need to dominate the basketball to make an impact. His shooting ability alone can change the way opposing teams defend Kentucky.
His performance also helped fuel a decisive first-half run. Kentucky outscored Manhattan 41-10 over the final 13 minutes of the opening half, taking a commanding 48-22 advantage into the break.
The Wildcats eventually finished with 12 three-pointers, shot 53% from the field, and received 26 points from their bench.
Of course, one game does not determine how an entire season will unfold. Kentucky will face significantly tougher competition, and Momcilovic will need to demonstrate that he can maintain this level of production against stronger defenses.
But his debut provided an encouraging glimpse of what could be coming.
Mark Pope needs reliable offensive weapons if Kentucky hopes to compete for major championships, and Momcilovic has already shown that he can be a difference-maker.
If he continues shooting with this kind of confidence and efficiency, his importance to the Wildcats could grow significantly as the season progresses.
Kentucky fans have plenty of reasons to be excited, and after what Momcilovic did against Manhattan, don’t be surprised if he becomes one of the most important pieces of Mark Pope’s team.
