Mark Pope isn’t slowing down on the recruiting trail.
While Kentucky prepares for another important stretch on the basketball calendar, Pope and a member of his coaching staff are spending Wednesday in Florida, where they will get an up-close look at two of the Wildcats’ biggest 2027 recruiting targets.
According to Rivals’ Jamie Shaw, Pope and one of his assistants are expected at Prolific Prep to watch five-star prospects Nasir Anderson and Lewis Uvwo work out.
And this isn’t just a routine recruiting stop.
Both prospects already have official visits scheduled with Kentucky, making Wednesday’s evaluation an important opportunity for Pope and his staff to continue building relationships with two players sitting near the top of the national rankings.
Anderson, a 6-foot-3 point guard from Georgia, is currently ranked No. 10 nationally in the Rivals Industry Ranking. His official visit to Kentucky is scheduled for October 5, giving the Wildcats another major opportunity to make an impression.
Uvwo, meanwhile, is ranked No. 7 nationally and will arrive in Lexington this weekend for his official visit.
Kentucky’s timing could hardly be better.
Uvwo’s visit will come during a massive recruiting weekend in Lexington, with Kentucky football hosting Alabama on Saturday. The combination of a high-profile football matchup and a basketball program loaded with momentum could give Pope and the Wildcats plenty of opportunities to showcase what Kentucky has to offer.
But Pope isn’t waiting until the official visits to make his pitch.
He wants to see both players compete in person first.
Several other major programs are also expected to be represented at Prolific Prep, including Miami, Cal, Baylor, Kansas and others. That level of interest shows just how important both prospects have become in the 2027 recruiting class.
Kentucky Has Been Building With Anderson for More Than a Year
Kentucky’s relationship with Anderson is hardly new.
The Wildcats first began contacting the talented point guard last June before eventually extending him an offer in September. Assistant coach Mikhail McLean has played a major role in Kentucky’s recruitment of Anderson, while Pope has remained heavily involved.
That consistent attention appears to have made an impression.
Anderson previously told KSR+ that Kentucky was the school contacting him most frequently.
He has already taken an official visit to Providence and has another one scheduled at Virginia before continuing a busy visit schedule that includes Syracuse, USC, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina.
With Anderson currently down to 10 schools, Kentucky has positioned itself for a potentially important battle.
Uvwo Is Quickly Becoming One of the Class’ Biggest Names
Then there is Uvwo.
The 7-foot center has emerged as one of the biggest risers in the 2027 class, and his physical tools make it easy to understand why.
Uvwo possesses a remarkable 7-foot-6 wingspan, giving him an enormous defensive presence around the basket. His performance on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer only strengthened his reputation.
At Peach Jam, Uvwo averaged 11.0 points, 9.4 rebounds and six blocks per game.
Across 28 games dating back to the spring, he averaged 9.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.5 blocks.
Those numbers help explain why Kentucky and several other national powers have aggressively pursued him.
Uvwo originally came to the United States from Nigeria and has developed rapidly into a five-star-caliber prospect.
Kentucky offered him in May, and the Wildcats have continued pushing hard for his commitment.
His official visit to Kentucky this weekend could therefore become one of the most important recruiting opportunities of the early fall.
Pope Is Making His Presence Felt
The message from Kentucky is becoming increasingly clear: Mark Pope intends to remain deeply involved in recruiting elite talent.
Rather than simply waiting for prospects to arrive on campus, Pope is putting in the work behind the scenes and traveling to see them compete firsthand.
With both Anderson and Uvwo scheduled to visit Kentucky soon, Wednesday’s trip to Florida gives the Wildcats another chance to strengthen those relationships before the prospects arrive in Lexington.
If Kentucky can turn those visits into commitments, Pope could potentially add another elite point guard and another dominant frontcourt piece to what is shaping up to be a very important 2027 recruiting class.
For now, though, the process continues.
And on Wednesday, Mark Pope will be watching closely.
