Kentucky basketball’s exhibition schedule may have revealed the starting lineup Mark Pope should consider ahead of the 2026-27 season. After a thrilling overtime victory over UCF, the Wildcats have given fans plenty to discuss, particularly regarding one freshman who is challenging the expectations surrounding the point guard position.
While Milan Momcilovic and Malachi Moreno continue to establish themselves as important pieces of Kentucky’s rotation, Mason Williams is emerging as a potential surprise starter. His performances could force Pope to reconsider his plans for Washington transfer Zoom Diallo before the regular season begins.
With the Wildcats preparing for the games that matter most, the battle for playing time is becoming increasingly interesting.
Mason Williams Is Changing the Conversation
Diallo entered the season with expectations of becoming Kentucky’s starting point guard, but the first three exhibition games have not gone entirely according to plan.
Williams has averaged eight points, one rebound, one assist, and one steal per game. More importantly, he has averaged fewer than one turnover per contest, demonstrating an ability to protect possession and help organize the offense.
Diallo, by comparison, has averaged four points, two rebounds, two assists, and two turnovers per game.
The freshman has also received more playing time than Diallo in each of Kentucky’s last two exhibition contests.
Those developments make Williams a legitimate candidate for the starting position. Although three games do not tell the entire story, Pope must consider which guard gives the Wildcats the best combination of decision-making, scoring, and offensive control.
If Williams continues to perform well, Diallo could find himself beginning the season on the bench rather than in the starting lineup.
Kentucky’s Other Starting Positions Look Clearer
At shooting guard, Alex Wilkins has made an encouraging impression, posting a plus-32 plus-minus rating through three exhibition games. His ability to score makes him a valuable option, although limiting turnovers remains an important area for improvement.
Momcilovic appears to be Kentucky’s most dependable offensive weapon. His performance against UCF, particularly during overtime, reinforced his ability to step up in important moments.
At power forward, Ousmane N’Diaye currently has an advantage over Justin McBride because of his defensive versatility and ability to compete for loose balls. However, the position battle remains open, and Kam Williams’ eventual return could create additional lineup possibilities.
Moreno rounds out the projected starting five at center. His performance against UCF, when he finished just two assists short of a triple-double, highlighted his potential as both a scorer and a facilitator.
Mark Pope Has a Difficult Decision Ahead
A potential lineup featuring Mason Williams, Alex Wilkins, Milan Momcilovic, Ousmane N’Diaye, and Malachi Moreno could give Kentucky a promising balance of scoring, defense, and ball security.
However, Pope must determine whether Williams can maintain his early momentum against tougher opponents. Diallo also has an opportunity to respond and demonstrate why he was expected to play such an important role.
The competition should benefit Kentucky regardless of who ultimately starts.
The biggest question now is whether Mark Pope will trust the freshman or stick with his original plans. With the regular season approaching, that decision could become one of the most important early storylines surrounding the Wildcats.
