What started as a relatively quiet offseason for Kentucky has turned into one of the most impressive roster-building efforts in college basketball.
The Wildcats received a massive boost Saturday when Missouri transfer Mark Mitchell announced his commitment to Mark Pope and Kentucky, giving Big Blue Nation another major reason to be excited about the upcoming season.
Mitchell joins Milan Momcilovic as one of two top-10 transfers brought in by the Wildcats this offseason. Kentucky also added talented guards Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, transforming a roster that initially faced plenty of questions into one with legitimate national championship potential.
The additions are especially impressive considering the criticism Pope and his staff faced earlier in the offseason after missing out on players such as Rob Wright and Donnie Freeman.
Despite those setbacks, Kentucky ultimately finished with the No. 1 transfer portal class in the country according to 247Sports.
The Wildcats’ incoming transfer group includes two five-star players, three four-star players and two three-star players, giving Pope considerable talent and depth across the roster.
The roster became even stronger when Malachi Moreno decided to return to Kentucky.
With Mitchell now in the fold, Kentucky appears to have upgraded virtually every position from a year ago. The combination of size, shooting, playmaking and versatility has many around the program believing this could be one of the most talented teams in the country.
Mitchell’s arrival could also dramatically change the look of Kentucky’s starting lineup. At 6-foot-9, his ability to score, rebound, defend and create plays gives Pope another versatile piece capable of impacting the game in multiple ways.
Now comes the most important part: seeing how all of these talented pieces fit together on the court.
There is still work to be done before the season begins, including Mitchell’s eligibility situation and the process of integrating a talented group of newcomers. But for now, Kentucky fans have every reason to celebrate.
Mark Pope entered the offseason facing plenty of pressure.
He answered with a transfer class that now sits at the top of the national rankings.
And with Big Blue Madness just over five weeks away, the excitement surrounding Kentucky basketball is reaching another level.
