Kentucky basketball may be getting closer to landing one of the most intriguing transfer targets available.
According to Kentucky Sports Radio’s Matt Jones, former Missouri standout Mark Mitchell has applied for admission to the University of Kentucky, marking another major development in a transfer saga that has captured the attention of Big Blue Nation.
Mitchell recently received a significant legal victory when a Kentucky judge granted a temporary restraining order allowing him to receive 2026-27 eligibility and enter the NCAA transfer portal.
Now, his reported application to enroll at Kentucky has added another layer to the situation.
“Source tells KSR that Mark Mitchell has applied to the University of Kentucky admissions office,” Jones reported.
However, the move does not mean Mitchell has officially committed to Kentucky or that his arrival in Lexington is guaranteed.
There are still several hurdles that must be cleared. According to Jones, those include an official commitment from Mitchell, Kentucky’s court appeal and the SEC’s efforts to enforce its waiver rule.
Even with those obstacles remaining, applying for admission is viewed as a significant step.
Mitchell would give Mark Pope an experienced SEC star capable of making an immediate impact. During his most recent season at Missouri, Mitchell averaged 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game, leading the Tigers in all three categories.
He started all 33 games and became only the second Missouri player to earn All-SEC honors twice since the Tigers joined the conference in 2012.
His ability to score, rebound and create opportunities for teammates would make him a potentially massive addition to Kentucky’s 2026-27 roster.
More importantly, Mitchell already knows the SEC and has proven that he can perform at a high level against conference competition.
For Kentucky, the situation is still far from settled. The Wildcats would need Mitchell to officially choose the program, while the ongoing legal and eligibility issues must also be resolved.
But his reported application to the University of Kentucky is undeniably significant.
What once looked like a complicated and uncertain possibility is now moving forward in a way that could have major consequences for Mark Pope and the Wildcats.
For Big Blue Nation, the Mark Mitchell saga just became even more interesting.
