Kentucky Basketball may have just received the biggest recruiting boost it could have hoped for following Mark Mitchell’s eligibility victory.
After a court injunction allowed Mitchell to pursue a fifth season, the former Duke and Missouri forward has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Even more intriguing, Mitchell entered the portal with a do-not-contact tag attached to his name.
That detail could be significant.
Mitchell had been unable to enter the portal while his eligibility situation remained unresolved. Following Friday’s court ruling in Louisville, however, that obstacle was removed, giving him the opportunity to explore his options for the upcoming season.
For Kentucky, the timing could hardly be better.
The Wildcats recently missed out on Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler, who chose BYU after considering Kentucky. With Kohler now off the board, Kentucky’s attention has increasingly shifted toward Mitchell as the program looks to potentially fill its remaining roster needs.
And there are reasons for Big Blue Nation to feel optimistic.
According to On3’s Joe Tipton, the recruitment could essentially come down to Kentucky and Missouri. Mitchell spent two seasons at Duke before transferring to Missouri, where he played for the Tigers for another two years.
Missouri would certainly have an advantage in familiarity, but the Tigers currently have a full roster. Bringing Mitchell back to Columbia would therefore require some roster maneuvering.
Kentucky, meanwhile, appears to have a much clearer path.
Tipton previously indicated that he had not heard another school consistently connected to Mitchell besides Kentucky and Missouri. He also pointed to Mitchell’s decision to take the eligibility fight to court as an indication that the player is serious about finding a way to continue his college career.
That makes his portal entry particularly interesting.
If Mitchell simply intended to return to Missouri, there would have been little reason to go through the process of obtaining eligibility and entering the transfer portal. His decision to explore the market suggests that a move elsewhere remains very much on the table.
And Kentucky could be the biggest beneficiary.
For Mark Pope, Mitchell would provide valuable experience, versatility and SEC familiarity. He also has the kind of high-level background that could make him an immediate contributor rather than another developmental piece.
Nothing is official yet, and Missouri cannot be ruled out. Mitchell still has a decision to make, and the Wildcats will have to close the deal if they want him in Lexington.
But after losing Kohler, Kentucky needed another opportunity.
It may have just gotten one.
With Mitchell now officially in the portal and Kentucky reportedly among his primary options, the Wildcats’ pursuit of their potential final addition has suddenly become one of the most fascinating storylines surrounding Mark Pope’s roster.
Big Blue Nation may not have to wait much longer to find out whether this eligibility battle ultimately leads Mitchell to Lexington.
