Kentucky’s pursuit of its final roster addition has taken another major turn.
After appearing to emerge as a serious contender for Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler, Kentucky has officially missed out on the talented big man. According to Joe Tipton, Kohler has committed to BYU, bringing an end to one of the more intriguing recruiting storylines surrounding the Wildcats this offseason.
Kohler, who averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds this season, was widely regarded as one of the best remaining frontcourt players in the transfer portal. Kentucky had been among the programs pursuing him, joining teams such as Kansas and Louisville in the race.
For Mark Pope, however, Kohler’s decision may have made Kentucky’s next move much easier to identify.
Mark Mitchell Could Be Kentucky’s Final Target
While Kentucky explored the possibility of bringing Kohler to Lexington, the Wildcats have also remained connected to Missouri transfer Mark Mitchell.
Mitchell’s situation is complicated by his eligibility battle. He is currently waiting on a court decision regarding his opportunity to play a fifth college season. That uncertainty has prevented Kentucky from simply moving forward with him as its final addition.
But with Kohler now off the board, the path appears considerably clearer.
If Mitchell receives the green light to play another season, Kentucky could quickly become one of the most important destinations in his recruitment.
The former All-SEC forward would also bring a different skill set from Kohler. Rather than simply adding another traditional big man, Mitchell could give Pope another versatile scoring option capable of contributing in multiple areas of the game.
Why Mitchell Could Be an Even Better Fit
Losing Kohler is certainly disappointing, particularly because of the production he could have brought to Kentucky’s frontcourt.
But Mitchell may actually fit Pope’s system more naturally.
A potential Kentucky lineup featuring Mitchell at the four, Milan Momcilovic on the wing and Malachi Moreno at center would give the Wildcats an intriguing combination of size, shooting and scoring.
Momcilovic provides elite perimeter shooting, Moreno gives Kentucky a talented interior presence, and Mitchell could add physicality and offensive versatility between them.
That combination could give Kentucky one of the most talented frontcourts in the country.
Of course, none of that matters until Mitchell is actually cleared and commits to Kentucky. There is still uncertainty surrounding his eligibility, and the Wildcats cannot assume that the final roster spot will automatically belong to him.
Still, Kohler’s decision to choose BYU has removed one major option from the board.
The Final Roster Spot Could Come Down to Mitchell
Pope has spent much of the offseason reshaping Kentucky’s roster, and the Wildcats appear to be approaching the finish line.
Kohler was one possible solution. Now that he is headed to BYU, attention naturally shifts back toward Mitchell.
If Mitchell receives approval to play a fifth season, Kentucky could have a clear opportunity to make a serious push.
For Big Blue Nation, the Kohler news may initially feel like a missed opportunity. But it could ultimately lead to something even more significant.
The Wildcats still have one major piece potentially available.
And if Mark Pope can land Mark Mitchell, Kentucky fans may quickly forget about the player they just missed.
