Kentucky’s search for one final frontcourt addition may have taken a major turn.
As the Wildcats continue to monitor Mark Mitchell’s ongoing eligibility case, Jaxon Kohler has suddenly emerged as a serious alternative for Mark Pope. And after what reportedly was an extremely positive conversation between Pope and the Michigan State transfer, Kentucky’s chances of landing him may have received a significant boost.
According to KSR’s Jack Pilgrim, Pope and Kohler spent nearly three hours on a Zoom call Wednesday. A source described the meeting as “as good as it could’ve gone” for Kentucky.
That is notable considering the Wildcats only entered the picture shortly after Kohler officially entered the transfer portal.
Kentucky’s pursuit of Kohler is moving quickly, and the timing could not be more important.
Kentucky May Have Made Up Ground Quickly
Kohler is also scheduled to speak with BYU, another program involved in his recruitment. However, the positive feedback coming out of his conversation with Pope has given Kentucky plenty of reason for optimism.
Pilgrim characterized the Kentucky meeting as “a step in the right direction,” while also reporting that Kohler’s camp would like to move quickly and “get this over with ASAP.”
That does not necessarily mean a commitment is imminent. NIL negotiations, roster decisions and other factors could still stretch the process out.
But Kentucky has clearly positioned itself as a legitimate contender.
And that could have major implications for Mitchell.
Pope Is Playing a High-Stakes Recruiting Game
For weeks, Mitchell appeared to be the obvious final piece Kentucky was waiting on. His eligibility lawsuit remains unresolved, leaving Pope in a difficult position.
Rather than simply wait, however, Kentucky has aggressively pursued Kohler.
That gives Pope another potential path to completing the roster.
Kohler averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game at Michigan State last season, giving Kentucky another experienced and productive frontcourt option. Mitchell, meanwhile, averaged 18.3 points per game while playing a major offensive role in the SEC.
Either player would represent a significant addition.
The challenge is making sure Kentucky lands at least one.
Kohler Could Be the Name to Watch
If Kohler finishes his remaining conversations without committing elsewhere, Kentucky could suddenly become one of the most intriguing destinations in his recruitment.
The Wildcats have moved quickly, Pope has already made a strong personal impression, and the reported length and quality of their conversation suggests Kentucky is taking this opportunity seriously.
At the same time, Mitchell’s legal battle remains extremely important.
If Mitchell receives the ruling Kentucky is hoping for, the Wildcats could quickly shift their attention back toward bringing him to Lexington. If the case does not go Kentucky’s way, Kohler could become the player who ultimately fills the final spot.
That makes the next few days especially important for Pope.
Kentucky may have started the summer waiting on one answer.
Now, the Wildcats appear to have two major possibilities—and one of them may be getting much closer to Lexington than anyone expected.
