Kentucky wasted no time making its intentions clear with Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler.
After officially entering the transfer portal Tuesday, the veteran forward quickly became a major target for Mark Pope and the Wildcats. Kentucky moved fast, setting up a Zoom meeting with Kohler and his representatives Wednesday — and the conversation reportedly lasted an impressive 2.5 hours.
According to sources, the meeting went about as well as Kentucky could have hoped.
«“As good as it could’ve gone,” one participant told KSR shortly after the meeting.»
That is significant considering Kohler is one of the most experienced players still available and could potentially fill Kentucky’s final roster spot with a proven frontcourt piece.
Kentucky Is Making Its Push
Kohler is not short on options.
BYU was also scheduled to meet with him Wednesday, while Louisville and Kansas remain involved in the race. Sources indicate, however, that Kohler is narrowing his focus to programs that make sense for what could be his final college season.
In other words, this may not become a long recruiting battle.
Kohler and his camp reportedly want to reach a decision quickly, with one source telling KSR:
«“We want to commit somewhere, like, yesterday. We want to get this over with ASAP.”»
There is even a possibility that Kohler could make his decision Wednesday.
That timeline makes Kentucky’s lengthy Zoom meeting even more important.
Why Kohler Makes Sense for Kentucky
The Michigan State veteran would bring exactly the type of experience Mark Pope could use.
Kohler averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game last season while shooting an impressive 50% from the field, 39% from three-point range and 87% from the free-throw line.
His production steadily improved throughout his four seasons in East Lansing, and he has already demonstrated that he can perform against high-level competition.
Kentucky fans saw that firsthand.
In the Champions Classic, Kohler delivered one of his best performances against the Wildcats, scoring 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, knocking down both of his three-point attempts, while adding five rebounds and two assists.
Now, the possibility of him wearing Kentucky blue has suddenly become very real.
The BYU Factor
BYU had previously been viewed as the team in the strongest position for Kohler.
But that was before Kentucky entered the picture.
The Wildcats’ ability to get directly involved and complete a 2.5-hour meeting could have significantly changed the equation. Kentucky now has an opportunity to make a late push for a player who could provide immediate production, veteran leadership and additional size.
The question is whether Pope did enough during that meeting to move Kentucky ahead of the competition.
For now, nobody knows for sure.
But the fact that Kohler’s decision could come as soon as Wednesday means Kentucky may not have much longer to wait.
Mark Pope’s Final Roster Spot Is Getting VERY Interesting
Kentucky has been searching for one final piece to complete its roster, and Kohler suddenly looks like one of the most intriguing possibilities.
Pope has already built a roster featuring significant size, shooting and versatility. Adding a proven Big Ten veteran who can rebound, score efficiently and stretch the floor could give the Wildcats another weapon heading into the 2026-27 season.
And unlike a long recruiting process, this one could be decided almost immediately.
Kentucky got its meeting.
The meeting reportedly went extremely well.
Now, the Wildcats are waiting to find out whether that was enough to land Jaxon Kohler.
If Kohler chooses Kentucky, Mark Pope’s final roster move could end up being one of the most important additions of the offseason.
