Mark Pope’s search for Kentucky’s final roster addition may be entering its most important stage yet.
The Wildcats have scheduled a Zoom meeting with former Michigan State forward Jaxon Kohler, according to KSR’s Jack Pilgrim. The development comes just one day after Kohler officially entered the transfer portal, giving Kentucky a chance to move quickly in what has suddenly become one of the most intriguing roster battles of the offseason.
Kentucky has spent much of the summer exploring its options for the final scholarship spot. Mark Mitchell has been a major focus, but his situation remains tied to his ongoing legal battle over his eligibility for another season.
Kohler, meanwhile, is immediately available to explore his options.
That could make him the more pressing target for Pope right now.
Kentucky Has a Major Decision to Make
Kohler has emerged as a popular transfer target, with BYU reportedly viewed as a strong option because of his Utah roots. Kansas, Louisville and Kentucky are also among the programs connected to him.
For Kentucky, the timing is especially significant.
If Mitchell eventually receives clearance to play another college season, Pope could have a difficult decision between two proven players. If Mitchell’s situation remains unresolved, however, Kohler could become the clearest path to filling Kentucky’s final roster spot.
Either way, the Wildcats appear to have some serious options.
What Kohler Would Bring to Kentucky
Kohler would give Kentucky a physical presence in the frontcourt and another proven rebounder.
During his senior season at Michigan State, he averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, coming close to averaging a double-double. He also showed an intriguing ability to stretch the floor, knocking down 38.9% of his three-point attempts.
That combination could make him an especially interesting fit for Pope’s roster.
Kentucky already has considerable size and athleticism, but adding a veteran big who can battle inside while also providing spacing would give the Wildcats another dimension.
Mitchell Remains a Fascinating Alternative
The comparison with Mark Mitchell is difficult to ignore.
Mitchell averaged 18.3 points and 5.2 rebounds last season while shooting 38.8% from three. He offers more offensive scoring punch, while Kohler provides more rebounding and interior physicality.
In other words, Pope’s decision could ultimately come down to what Kentucky needs most.
Mitchell would give the Wildcats another proven scoring weapon. Kohler could provide additional toughness and frontcourt stability.
The Next Move Could Come Quickly
The Zoom meeting with Kohler gives Kentucky an opportunity to make a strong impression before the transfer market settles.
Pope has already demonstrated a willingness to aggressively pursue late opportunities, and this situation could be another example of that approach.
If the meeting goes well, Kohler could quickly become Kentucky’s priority for the final roster spot.
At the same time, Pope may not be ready to completely abandon the possibility of landing Mitchell.
For Kentucky, the waiting game may finally be approaching its conclusion.
And after months of roster movement, one final decision could determine exactly how dangerous Mark Pope’s 2026-27 Wildcats become.
