Kentucky’s search for one final roster piece just became a lot more interesting.
With Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler officially entering the transfer portal, Mark Pope now has an opportunity to pursue a player who could make a major impact in Lexington. The catch? Kentucky is starting behind some of the competition because Pope and his staff were unable to communicate with Kohler before he entered the portal.
That changes now.
Almost immediately after Kohler’s decision became public, college basketball insider Jeff Goodman identified Kentucky as a team to watch. BYU is believed to be the early favorite, largely because Kohler is from Utah, but Kentucky is among the programs he has reportedly considered alongside Kansas and Louisville.
The Wildcats also have something important working in their favor: an open roster spot.
Pope now has the chance to make up for lost time and show Kohler why Kentucky could be the right destination.
Kohler Fits What Kentucky Needs
Kohler would be more than just another name added to the roster. His skill set makes him an intriguing potential fit alongside sophomore center Malachi Moreno.
During his senior season at Michigan State, Kohler averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 38.9% from three-point range.
That combination immediately stands out.
Kohler has the size and rebounding ability to compete inside, but he can also step away from the basket and punish defenses from the perimeter. His passing ability would also allow him to operate as a playmaking big, something that fits naturally into the offensive concepts Pope has emphasized.
In many ways, he could provide Kentucky with the type of versatile frontcourt partner who allows Moreno to remain comfortable around the basket.
Kentucky Has Competition
The biggest issue may simply be timing.
BYU has reportedly been in a strong position from the beginning, and the Cougars have the geographic connection that makes them an obvious contender. Kentucky, meanwhile, is only now getting the opportunity to establish a relationship with Kohler.
That means Pope will have to move quickly.
The Wildcats are also still monitoring the situation surrounding former Missouri transfer Mark Mitchell. His eligibility situation remains unresolved, creating another layer of uncertainty as Kentucky approaches the start of the season.
If Mitchell becomes available, Kentucky could have to weigh his physicality and scoring against the versatility Kohler would provide.
There is also the possibility that Kentucky continues to monitor Auburn transfer Keyshawn Hall as the roster picture develops.
For Pope, it is an enviable problem—but also a difficult one.
Kohler Could Be Too Good to Ignore
Kentucky doesn’t necessarily have to choose Kohler over every other option immediately, but allowing him to leave without making a serious push would be difficult to justify.
His production, experience and ability to stretch the floor make him one of the more intriguing players available this late in the offseason.
And while Kentucky may have lost valuable recruiting time before his portal entry, Pope finally has the opportunity to make his pitch.
With the season rapidly approaching and one roster spot still available, the Wildcats’ final addition could come down to which player best fits what Pope wants this team to become.
Jaxon Kohler may have just entered the picture at the perfect time for Kentucky.
Now, Mark Pope has to make up for lost time.
