As the 2026-27 Kentucky basketball season approaches, most of the Wildcats’ biggest names are already easy to identify. Milan Momcilovic is expected to be a major weapon from three-point range, while Malachi Moreno, Zoom Diallo, Alex Wilkins and a healthy Kam Williams could all play important roles for Mark Pope.
But the most intriguing question may be which player comes out of nowhere to become an unexpected difference-maker.
Kentucky has several players entering the season with uncertain roles, and there are multiple candidates who could force their way into the rotation.
Freshman guard Mason Williams has generated plenty of buzz throughout the summer despite arriving in Lexington without a top-100 recruiting ranking. His performances have reportedly turned heads, making him one of the more intriguing young players on the roster.
Washington State transfer Jerone Morton is another name to watch. Morton finished the summer at the top of Kentucky’s practice leaderboard, showing that he can potentially contribute at both guard positions. His versatility could become especially valuable over the course of a long season.
Then there is Braydon Hawthorne.
The redshirt freshman did not see the floor last season, but the former top-50 recruit has plenty of talent. His combination of size and skill has already drawn comparisons to Kentucky legend Tayshaun Prince, and the 2026-27 season could provide Hawthorne with an opportunity to finally show what he can do.
Trent Noah is another potential breakout candidate.
The junior forward has shown flashes during his Kentucky career but has yet to establish himself as a consistent contributor. With a new season ahead, Noah could finally find the consistency needed to carve out a meaningful role in Pope’s rotation.
Reece Potter may have an even clearer path to playing time.
The redshirt junior is currently the only other healthy center on the roster behind Moreno, especially with Franck Kepnang having missed the summer and continuing to deal with injury concerns. If Kentucky needs additional size inside, Potter could suddenly find himself playing much more than expected.
That is what makes this roster so interesting.
Kentucky has established stars, but there are also several players who could dramatically change the team’s outlook by exceeding expectations.
Whether it is Mason Williams making an immediate impact, Morton’s versatility, Hawthorne finally breaking through, Noah finding consistency or Potter taking advantage of an opportunity, Pope could have an unexpected contributor emerge once the games begin.
And if one of those players turns into a legitimate rotation piece, Kentucky’s ceiling could rise considerably.
