Mark Pope’s third season at Kentucky could be the most important of his tenure so far, and a new ESPN projection has only increased the pressure surrounding the Wildcats heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
Pope impressed in his first season, taking a hastily assembled Kentucky roster to the Sweet 16 despite significant injuries. Year two, however, was a different story. The Wildcats struggled to live up to expectations, suffered 14 losses and exited the NCAA Tournament in the Round of 32.
Now, Pope has rebuilt his roster once again, and this group appears to fit his offensive philosophy much better.
ESPN’s Myron Medcalf recently examined the ceiling and floor of every SEC team, and Kentucky’s range of outcomes is particularly intriguing.
A 30-Win Season Is Within Reach
Medcalf believes Kentucky’s ceiling could be extremely high.
In his best-case scenario, the Wildcats win 30 games, finish second in the SEC and reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
That would be a massive accomplishment for Pope.
Kentucky has not reached the Elite Eight or won 30 games since 2019. Doing both in one of the deepest conferences in college basketball would give Pope a strong argument that the program is moving in the right direction.
But there is another side to the projection.
ESPN’s Worst-Case Scenario Is Concerning
Medcalf’s projected floor for Kentucky is 20 wins, an eighth-place SEC finish and a first-round NCAA Tournament exit.
That would be a major disappointment, particularly after last season’s early tournament elimination.
It would also put even more attention on Pope’s future in Lexington.
Kentucky enters the season surrounded by enormous expectations, and another underwhelming campaign could make the conversation surrounding Pope increasingly uncomfortable.
Momcilovic and Moreno Could Hold the Key
Two players could have an enormous impact on where Kentucky ultimately lands: Milan Momcilovic and Malachi Moreno.
Momcilovic arrives as one of the most highly regarded additions from the transfer portal after averaging 16.9 points per game at Iowa State while shooting 49% from three-point range.
His shooting ability could dramatically change Kentucky’s offensive ceiling.
Moreno, meanwhile, gives Pope an important piece in the frontcourt after choosing to return to Kentucky for his sophomore season rather than enter the NBA Draft.
If both players perform at a high level and Kentucky stays healthy, the Wildcats could have enough talent to make a serious run through the SEC and NCAA Tournament.
The schedule will also provide major tests. Kentucky faces Florida and Texas on the road and hosts Arkansas — three teams ESPN views as having championship-level potential.
Winning two of those three games could go a long way toward turning the ceiling projection into reality.
The message from ESPN is clear: Kentucky has the talent to make a deep run, but the margin for error may be smaller than ever for Mark Pope.
The 2026-27 season could ultimately determine whether Pope takes Kentucky to another level — or finds himself facing even bigger questions about his future in Lexington.
