The Kentucky Wildcats began their exhibition schedule with a 69–49 victory over Little Rock on Friday night, giving fans their first opportunity to see Mark Pope’s team in action this season. While the 20-point win was an encouraging start, one detail stood out beyond the final score: Kentucky’s ability to make an impact defensively while still searching for consistency on offense.
The Wildcats showed flashes of what they could become, but their performance also revealed areas that will require attention before the regular season begins.
Kentucky’s Defense Set the Tone
Kentucky’s defensive effort was one of the biggest positives from the exhibition. The Wildcats limited Little Rock to just 49 points and made it difficult for the visitors to find a rhythm from the perimeter.
Little Rock connected on only two of its 20 three-point attempts, while Kentucky controlled the game after taking an early lead. That defensive pressure helped the Wildcats overcome stretches when their offense struggled to find its flow.
For Pope, establishing a reliable defensive identity could be crucial as Kentucky prepares for a demanding schedule. The Wildcats do not need to rely entirely on their shooting to win games if they can consistently make life difficult for opposing offenses.
Milan Momcilovic Leads the Offense
On the offensive end, Milan Momcilovic provided one of the night’s standout performances. The Iowa State transfer finished with 16 points and connected on four of seven attempts from beyond the arc.
His perimeter shooting offered a glimpse of how Kentucky could create more space for its other offensive weapons. When Momcilovic finds his rhythm, opposing defenses will have to think twice about leaving him open.
Alex Wilkins added 11 points, while Mason Williams contributed 10. Their performances gave Pope encouraging signs that multiple players can provide scoring rather than leaving the responsibility to one or two individuals.
Malachi Moreno also made his presence felt. Although he finished with six points, the big man grabbed 11 rebounds, recorded three assists and blocked three shots. His contributions demonstrated how he can influence a game beyond scoring.
The One Concern Mark Pope Must Address
Despite the victory, Kentucky recorded 19 turnovers against just 12 assists. That statistic could concern Pope as he evaluates his team’s offensive execution.
Against Little Rock, the Wildcats’ defensive dominance helped them maintain control. Against stronger opponents, however, careless turnovers could quickly change the outcome of a game.
Kentucky will need to improve its ball security and develop better offensive chemistry as the season approaches.
The Wildcats face Texas Tech on October 23 before meeting UCF on October 28. Those exhibitions will provide further opportunities to address the mistakes.
Kentucky’s opening performance offered plenty of reasons for optimism. However, if Pope can turn the defensive intensity into a more disciplined offensive attack, this team could become even more dangerous.
