La Familia’s memorable run through The Basketball Tournament ended one win shy of a championship on Sunday, as Kentucky’s alumni squad fell 67-59 to Davis Steel in the title game at Historic Memorial Coliseum.
After capturing the attention of Big Blue Nation throughout the tournament, La Familia battled its way to the $2 million championship game. Although the Wildcats’ alumni couldn’t finish the job, their journey from an early setback to the tournament finale was one of the most impressive runs in team history.
Archie Goodwin once again led the offense, scoring 19 points and keeping La Familia within reach for much of the contest. However, Davis Steel controlled the game with its physical style of play, especially in the paint, preventing Kentucky’s alumni from ever taking command.
The biggest difference came on the glass. Davis Steel outrebounded La Familia 48-37, creating numerous second-chance opportunities that ultimately proved decisive. Those extra possessions turned into 23 second-chance points, giving Davis Steel a clear advantage despite shooting only 25 percent from three-point range.
Heading into the matchup, there were concerns about Davis Steel’s perimeter shooting, but La Familia defended the three-point line well. Instead, the inability to consistently secure defensive rebounds allowed Davis Steel to dictate the game’s tempo and wear down Kentucky’s squad.
La Familia also competed throughout the tournament without several familiar former Wildcats. The absence of players such as Marcus Lee and Quade Green limited the team’s depth, particularly in the frontcourt. An additional interior presence could have helped combat Davis Steel’s physical approach around the basket.
Despite the disappointment of falling in the championship game, La Familia gave Kentucky fans plenty to celebrate. The team overcame adversity, delivered several exciting performances, and energized Memorial Coliseum with a memorable tournament run.
With veterans like Willie Cauley-Stein contributing and Goodwin leading the way offensively, La Familia reminded Big Blue Nation of the talent and pride that former Wildcats continue to bring to the court.
While the championship slipped away this year, the foundation has been set for another run next summer. Kentucky fans will undoubtedly be hoping many of the same familiar faces return for another opportunity to chase the program’s first TBT title.
