Kentucky head coach Mark Pope is continuing his search for the final addition to his coaching staff ahead of his third season in Lexington. While Mo Williams has already joined the program following the departures of Alvin Brooks III and Jason Hart, Pope says he is taking a patient approach before filling the remaining vacancy.
The current staff has handled summer responsibilities well, with director of operations Nick Robinson taking on additional on-court and recruiting duties alongside assistants Cody Fueger, Mark Fox and Williams. Because of that, Pope believes there is no need to rush into a decision until the right candidate becomes available.
During an appearance on The Alan Cutler Show, Pope discussed how the growing influence of international basketball has changed the way programs evaluate coaching hires. He acknowledged that recruiting overseas talent has become an increasingly important part of building successful college basketball teams.
Pope pointed to programs such as Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga and Illinois as examples of schools that have consistently benefited from strong international recruiting. Their success has demonstrated how valuable overseas relationships can be in assembling competitive rosters.
Kentucky is now seriously evaluating whether adding an assistant with deep international experience would strengthen the program. Pope believes the answer may depend on how the NCAA handles evolving eligibility issues involving experienced international professionals.
He specifically referenced LSU’s aggressive pursuit of overseas players with professional backgrounds, describing the situation as one the entire sport is watching closely. If NCAA rules ultimately allow more veteran international professionals to compete in college basketball, Pope said the value of having an international recruiting specialist on staff would only increase.
If the NCAA instead maintains stricter eligibility standards, Kentucky could decide that its final coaching hire should focus on other strengths, such as domestic recruiting or player development.
Pope also revealed that he has spent the last two months interviewing candidates and recently met with a well-known international coach. Although he declined to identify the individual, he confirmed the candidate is highly regarded and remains part of Kentucky’s evaluation process.
For now, the Wildcats are continuing to monitor the changing college basketball landscape before making a final decision, ensuring their next hire aligns with both the program’s long-term vision and whatever direction the NCAA ultimately takes.
