Every offseason, the transfer portal brings excitement, expectations, and plenty of questions. Kentucky added several talented newcomers, but fans were eager to see which player would make the quickest impact once the Wildcats started facing live competition.
The closed-door scrimmage against La Familia may have provided that answer.
Among Kentucky’s standout performers, Alex Wilkins looked like the kind of transfer who can make an immediate difference. In the Wildcats’ 31-19 victory over the alumni team, Wilkins impressed with his composure, defensive effort, and efficient offensive play.
Rather than trying to force shots or dominate the ball, Wilkins let the game come to him. He consistently made the right reads, finished scoring opportunities, and contributed on the defensive end with timely stops. Those are exactly the qualities Mark Pope has emphasized since assembling this roster.
What made Wilkins’ performance especially encouraging was how naturally he fit into Kentucky’s system. The Wildcats moved the ball well, played with pace, and relied on multiple contributors instead of one player carrying the offense. Wilkins thrived within that approach, showing he understands how to impact winning without needing to post eye-popping numbers.
His performance also complemented the strong outings from Ousmane N’Diaye, Zoom Diallo, and Braydon Hawthorne. While Diallo and Hawthorne stretched the floor with their outside shooting and N’Diaye anchored the defense, Wilkins quietly tied everything together with his all-around play.
That’s often what separates good transfer additions from great ones. The best newcomers don’t just add talent—they elevate the players around them.
Of course, one scrimmage doesn’t guarantee what will happen once the regular season begins. Kentucky still has months of work ahead and far tougher opponents waiting on the schedule.
Even so, the early signs are difficult to ignore.
Wilkins looked comfortable, confident, and completely in sync with his new teammates. If that chemistry continues to grow, Kentucky may have landed one of its most important transfer additions of the offseason.
