Mark Pope and John Calipari’s rivalry has already produced memorable matchups on the court, but the latest chapter is unfolding on the recruiting trail.
Kentucky and Arkansas are both aggressively pursuing four-star center Caleb Ourigou, one of the top prospects in the 2027 recruiting class. The 6-foot-10 standout has emerged as one of the nation’s most coveted big men, with UConn and BYU also competing for his commitment as his recruitment nears a pivotal moment.
Recruiting insider Joe Tipton recently reported that Ourigou is getting closer to making his college decision, making this one of the biggest recruiting battles to watch in the 2027 cycle.
Right now, Arkansas appears to have the momentum. A Crystal Ball prediction from 247Sports currently favors John Calipari and the Razorbacks, though recruiting can change quickly before a prospect officially announces his decision.
For Pope, landing Ourigou would be another significant recruiting victory as he continues building Kentucky’s future. The Wildcats already have five-star forward Ryan Hampton committed in the 2027 class, giving Pope an elite scorer on the wing. Pairing Hampton with a dominant interior force like Ourigou would give Kentucky one of the nation’s most promising recruiting classes.
Ourigou possesses the type of size, athleticism, and physicality that projects well in the SEC. At 6-foot-10 and 240 pounds, he has the tools to make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor.
247Sports national analyst Adam Finkelstein has praised Ourigou’s ability to finish above the rim, rebound consistently, run the floor, and develop into a reliable low-post scorer. Those qualities have helped establish him as one of the premier frontcourt prospects in the 2027 class.
If Kentucky ultimately loses this recruiting battle, it would sting even more if Ourigou chooses Arkansas. Not only would the Wildcats miss out on an elite talent, but they could also find themselves facing him every season in SEC play.
The recruitment is far from over, and Pope still has time to make a final push. But as things stand today, Kentucky has ground to make up if it hopes to keep another prized recruit away from Calipari and the Razorbacks.
