Mark Pope made an immediate impact in the transfer portal when he arrived at Kentucky in 2024. Hired late in the coaching cycle, he had little choice but to quickly build a competitive roster from the remaining portal talent available.
Fast forward to this offseason, and Pope’s recruiting strategy has taken another major step forward. While Kentucky landed its first five-star high school commitment of the Pope era in Ryan Hampton, the Wildcats continue to rely heavily on experienced transfers to shape their roster for the upcoming season.
The biggest sign of that progress is a simple statistic: Kentucky is one of only four programs in the country with three transfers ranked inside the top 50 by 247Sports. That exclusive group also includes Tennessee, Indiana, and North Carolina.
Leading the way is forward Milan Momcilovic, who is ranked as the No. 2 transfer in the nation. He is joined by point guard Zoom Diallo at No. 26 and shooting guard Alex Wilkins at No. 41, giving Kentucky one of the deepest and most talented transfer classes in college basketball.
A Transfer Class Built to Win
While Momcilovic headlines the class with his elite outside shooting, Kentucky’s additions extend well beyond its top-ranked newcomers.
Diallo is expected to bring leadership and playmaking to the backcourt, while Wilkins has generated excitement because of his all-around offensive potential and versatility.
The Wildcats also strengthened their depth with the addition of Justin McBride, whose efficient perimeter shooting and scoring ability could make him an important contributor off the bench. After thriving as a featured scorer at James Madison, McBride gives Kentucky another reliable offensive weapon.
Inside, veteran center Franck Kepnang is expected to play a critical role behind Malachi Moreno. His shot-blocking ability and experience should provide valuable depth in the frontcourt, especially against the physical competition of the SEC.
Kentucky’s Most Complete Roster Under Pope?
If the Wildcats stay healthy, this roster has the potential to be the strongest Mark Pope has assembled since arriving in Lexington. The combination of elite transfer talent, experienced depth, and improved recruiting gives Kentucky a foundation capable of competing with the nation’s best.
The Wildcats have already proven they can succeed in the transfer portal, but this year’s class may represent Pope’s biggest recruiting victory yet. Having three top-50 transfers on one roster highlights just how far Kentucky has come in a short periodโand why expectations for the upcoming season continue to rise.
