Kentucky head coach Mark Pope has made it clear that the Wildcats are still exploring ways to strengthen their roster before the 2026-27 season begins.
Although Kentucky currently has 14 scholarship players, Pope confirmed that the program is actively looking at potential additions for the final available roster spot. However, he emphasized that the Wildcats will only make another move if they find a player who truly fits the team’s needs and culture.
Speaking with CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Pope explained that several recruiting possibilities remain on the table, with different directions the staff could take.
“We have a spot open,” Pope said. “There are a lot of intriguing things happening, and we’re still evaluating all of them.”
Kentucky has already been connected to Serbian prospect Nikola Kusturica and 2027 four-star reclassification candidate Caleb Ourigou, although recent recruiting projections suggest those players may ultimately choose other schools.
The Wildcats are also dealing with some injury concerns during summer workouts. Kam Williams and Franck Kepnang have both been sidelined since workouts began, while Reece Potter has also missed time. Those situations could influence whether Kentucky prioritizes adding another perimeter scorer or additional frontcourt depth before the season.
Another possibility is accelerating the timeline for five-star commitment Ryan Hampton, who is eligible to reclassify from the 2027 recruiting class if both sides decide it’s the right move.
Despite the various options, Pope stressed that Kentucky won’t rush into filling the final scholarship spot simply for the sake of having a full roster.
“We’re still really active in recruiting right now,” Pope said. “But it has to be the right piece at the right time. We’ll see if that happens, but we’re still fully engaged.”
Pope also revealed that he’ll travel to Istanbul, Türkiye, for the FIBA U17 World Cup, where he’ll evaluate international prospects along with members of Team USA and other participating countries. The event could provide another opportunity for Kentucky to identify a player capable of completing what Pope hopes will be a championship-caliber roster.
For now, Big Blue Nation will have to wait and see whether Kentucky adds one more piece before the Wildcats begin preparations for the upcoming season.
