Every summer, a few players begin to separate themselves before the season even starts. This year, one Wildcat is generating more buzz than almost anyone else inside Kentucky’s practice facility.
That player is Justin McBride.
After arriving in Lexington, McBride made a major commitment to transforming his body, reportedly dropping around 20 pounds during the offseason. The results have been obvious in summer workouts. His improved conditioning has allowed him to play at the fast pace that head coach Mark Pope demands, and coaches have reportedly been impressed by the energy, effort, and consistency he brings every day.
McBride’s ability to run the floor, defend multiple positions, and compete on every possession is giving Kentucky another versatile piece that could become one of the team’s biggest surprises. If his development continues at this pace, he could play a much larger role than many expected when the roster was first assembled.
That doesn’t mean he’s the only Wildcat turning heads.
Alex Wilkins, the transfer from Furman, has quickly earned praise for his leadership and all-around game. His experience and versatility have helped stabilize the backcourt, while his ability to create offense and make smart decisions has stood out throughout the summer.
In the frontcourt, Malachi Moreno continues to show why Kentucky believes he can become one of the SEC’s most impactful big men. Moreno has been a dominant interior presence during workouts, using his size, rebounding ability, and improving offensive skill set to make life difficult for teammates in practice.
Freshman guard Zoom Diallo has also lived up to the hype. The talented newcomer has showcased his speed, explosiveness, and confidence with the ball in his hands, giving coaches another dynamic option as they continue building the rotation.
While several Wildcats have impressed during the early stages of summer practice, much of the recent excitement has centered on McBride’s remarkable transformation. His improved fitness and relentless effort have not gone unnoticed, and if he continues progressing over the next few months, he could become one of the most important pieces of Kentucky’s success this season.
It’s still only summer, but the early signs are encouraging. Mark Pope appears to have assembled a roster filled with talent, depth, and versatilityโand if Justin McBride’s breakout continues, Kentucky may have found a difference-maker capable of changing the trajectory of the Wildcats’ 2026-27 campaign.
