Mark Pope has wasted no time shifting Kentucky’s focus toward the future, and the Wildcats are already making serious moves in the 2027 recruiting class. With much of the current roster now in place following the addition of Milan Momcilovic, Pope and his staff have turned their attention to landing elite high school talent.
Kentucky already holds a commitment from five-star forward Ryan Hampton, but the coaching staff appears determined to build something even bigger.
One of their biggest priorities is now Marcus Spears Jr., the consensus No. 1 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class.
According to reports from KSR, Pope and assistant coach Mo Williams traveled to Texas for the 2026 TABC Boys Showcase, where they evaluated Spears alongside several other elite prospects. Their appearance wasn’t just another recruiting stop—it showed that Kentucky is making the nation’s top-ranked player a major priority.
Reports also indicate that Pope met with Spears and his father during the trip, adding even more momentum to the Wildcats’ pursuit.
Landing Spears would instantly transform an already impressive recruiting class into one of the best in the country.
At 6-foot-9 and 210 pounds, Spears is regarded as one of the nation’s most complete prospects. He can finish above the rim, handle the basketball, score from multiple areas of the floor, and defend several positions while protecting the rim.
Kentucky also has another advantage in its recruiting pitch. Spears is cousins with five-star Kentucky commit Ryan Hampton, giving the Wildcats a built-in relationship that could play an important role throughout the recruiting process.
If Pope ultimately lands Spears, the pairing of Hampton and the nation’s No. 1 recruit could give Kentucky one of the most talented young frontcourts in college basketball.
Pope’s recruiting reputation has continued to rise over the past several months. After facing questions about landing elite high school talent, Kentucky is now firmly in the mix for some of the biggest names in the country.
While winning the recruitment of the No. 1 player won’t be easy, the Wildcats have clearly established themselves as a legitimate contender. If Pope can seal the deal, Kentucky could be putting together a recruiting class capable of shaping the program’s future and competing for championships in the years ahead.
