Mark Pope isn’t spending the summer standing still. While the Wildcats continue putting in work during offseason practices in Lexington, Kentucky’s head coach has also been making recruiting a top priority—and it’s becoming increasingly clear that he’s focused on building something that can last.
Over the weekend, Pope traveled to Duncanville, Texas, for the 2026 TABC Boys Showcase, where many of the nation’s top high school prospects were competing. Among the players he evaluated were five-star standouts Reese Alston and Marcus Spears Jr., two highly regarded recruits who are attracting attention from major programs across the country.
Kentucky’s recruiting efforts stretched beyond Texas as well. Members of Pope’s staff were in Atlanta for the GBCA Southeast Regional, ensuring the Wildcats had eyes on another group of elite prospects. By covering multiple major events at the same time, Kentucky is casting a wide net in its search for future talent.
The recruiting tour may not stop there. The FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul, Turkey, is another event that could draw Pope or members of his staff, giving Kentucky another opportunity to evaluate some of the best young players from around the world.
With summer workouts helping develop the current roster and an aggressive recruiting strategy targeting future stars, Pope is laying the foundation for Kentucky’s next chapter. It’s still early, but the energy on the recruiting trail suggests the Wildcats are determined to remain among college basketball’s elite for years to come.
