The Duke Blue Devils knew they were getting a talented player when John Blackwell arrived in Durham.
What they may not have realized is that they could be getting a future superstar.
As summer workouts continue, Blackwell has become one of the biggest storylines inside the program. The transfer guard has reportedly been one of the most impressive players on the court, showcasing the complete offensive package that made him one of the most coveted additions of Duke’s offseason.
For head coach Jon Scheyer, the early returns couldn’t be more encouraging.
Blackwell has brought an aggressive mentality to every workout session. Whether attacking the rim, knocking down perimeter shots, or creating opportunities for teammates, he has consistently looked like a player ready to take on a starring role.
What has stood out most is his confidence.
Players often need months to adjust after transferring into a new program, especially one with the expectations that come with Duke Basketball. Blackwell, however, appears to be embracing the challenge. Teammates have reportedly been impressed by his competitive nature and willingness to take charge during intense workout sessions.
That confidence is translating into production.
Observers around the program have noted that Blackwell’s scoring ability has been difficult to contain. His combination of size, strength, and shot-making gives him multiple ways to impact the game. Defenders can’t simply play him for the drive or the jumper because he’s capable of beating them either way.
Those qualities have fueled growing excitement about what he could become this season.
While returning guard Caleb Foster continues to serve as one of the team’s leaders, Blackwell’s emergence may be the development that raises Duke’s ceiling. His ability to generate offense when possessions break down is something every championship contender needs.
The talent around him only makes the situation more intriguing.
Sophomore wing Dame Sarr continues to develop into a versatile two-way weapon. Patrick Ngongba II has made strides in expanding his offensive game, while freshman Cameron Williams has already shown flashes of the potential that made him one of the nation’s top recruits.
Yet despite all of that talent, Blackwell is the player generating some of the loudest praise.
The scary part for opposing teams is that this is only the beginning.
Summer workouts are designed for development, chemistry building, and preparation. Players are still learning systems, refining skills, and adjusting to new teammates. If Blackwell is already dominating stretches of practice, his potential impact once the season begins could be enormous.
It’s still early, and expectations should always be tempered during the offseason.
But sometimes summer workouts reveal something bigger.
Sometimes they reveal a player on the verge of stardom.
And if the buzz surrounding Duke’s workouts is any indication, Jon Scheyer may be sitting on a future superstar in John Blackwell—one who is rapidly becoming impossible to ignore.
