Jon Scheyer is once again proving why Duke remains one of the biggest recruiting powerhouses in college basketball. Since replacing Mike Krzyzewski, Scheyer has consistently attracted elite talent, showing that the Blue Devils haven’t lost their edge in the race for the nation’s top prospects.
Despite back-to-back disappointing finishes in the NCAA Tournament, Scheyer has kept Duke firmly among the championship favorites by reloading the roster with elite recruits every offseason. His long-term vision is becoming more evident with every recruiting cycle.
That vision became even clearer this week.
Duke officially extended scholarship offers to two of the top-ranked players in the 2028 recruiting class—five-star forwards AJ Williams and Colton Hiller. By making both prospects priorities so early in the process, Scheyer is signaling that he intends to build another championship-caliber roster years before these players even step onto a college campus.
Williams, a 6-foot-8 forward, is widely regarded as one of the top overall prospects in the country. His combination of size, athleticism, and all-around skill has many scouts projecting him as a future superstar. Nearly every major recruiting service has him ranked at or near the top of the 2028 class.
Hiller is just as impressive. The 6-foot-6 wing has emerged as one of the nation’s most dangerous scorers. Playing on the EYBL circuit with the PSA Cardinals, he has averaged 21 points per game against elite competition, showcasing the offensive firepower that has made him one of the hottest recruits in the country.
Adding either player would be a huge victory for Duke. Landing both would instantly give the Blue Devils one of the most remarkable recruiting hauls imaginable.
While convincing two elite prospects to join the same program is never easy, Scheyer has repeatedly shown that Duke remains a destination for the nation’s best talent. His recruiting success over the past several years suggests the Blue Devils will be serious contenders throughout both recruitments.
The latest offers reveal more than just interest in two outstanding players—they highlight Scheyer’s commitment to keeping Duke at the top of college basketball. If this recruiting strategy continues to pay off, the Blue Devils could be setting the foundation for another dominant era in Durham.
