Every offseason, there is always one player who begins generating so much buzz that fans can’t help but pay attention.
This summer, that player may be John Blackwell.
When Duke landed the talented transfer, expectations were already high. Blackwell arrived in Durham with a reputation as a versatile scorer, a tough competitor, and a player capable of impacting games on both ends of the floor. But based on what is being seen during offseason workouts, he may be even better than advertised.
In fact, some early reports suggest Blackwell has been one of the most impressive players in Duke’s gym this summer.
That’s saying something considering the amount of talent on the Blue Devils’ roster.
With Cameron Boozer entering the season as one of the biggest stars in college basketball and Isaiah Evans continuing his development into an elite scoring threat, many assumed the spotlight would naturally belong to them.
Instead, Blackwell has quietly forced his way into the conversation.
His combination of strength, athleticism, shot-making ability, and relentless motor has reportedly stood out throughout workouts. Whether it’s attacking the basket, knocking down perimeter shots, or creating offense for teammates, Blackwell appears determined to make an immediate impact in his first season wearing a Duke uniform.
What makes his emergence so important is the role he could play within Jon Scheyer’s system.
Championship-caliber teams need players who can take pressure off their stars. Opponents will undoubtedly devote significant attention to slowing down Cameron Boozer and limiting Isaiah Evans. If Blackwell can consistently punish defenses for doing so, Duke’s offense could become one of the most dangerous units in the country.
The coaching staff has also reportedly been impressed by Blackwell’s leadership and work ethic. Despite being new to the program, he’s quickly earned respect from teammates through his competitiveness and willingness to lead by example.
Those qualities often separate good players from great ones.
For Duke fans, the excitement is understandable.
Every year, there seems to be one player who exceeds expectations and becomes a major storyline by the time conference play arrives. Early signs suggest Blackwell could be that player for the Blue Devils this season.
Social media discussions among Duke supporters have already started picking up steam. Fans are beginning to realize that Blackwell may not simply be a valuable addition to the roster—he could become one of the team’s most important players.
And if that happens, the rest of college basketball could have a serious problem.
It’s still only summer, and there is plenty of work left before the season begins. But the reports coming out of Durham are becoming harder to ignore with each passing week.
Sometimes a player arrives with hype.
Sometimes a player earns it.
And if John Blackwell continues performing the way he has during summer workouts, Duke may have unleashed a monster.
The scary part for the rest of the nation?
This might only be the beginning.
