Liverpool fans were left stunned after being shown their last team to play Sparta Prague in the Europa League.
Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League leaders travel to the Czech Republic on Thursday for the first leg of their last-16 tie. Despite the expected tense atmosphere, they will fancy themselves against Sparta Prague, who are currently leading the Czech top flight.
It marks 13 years since Liverpool last made the same trip, facing Sparta in the same competition’s Round of 32 in the 2010/11 season. And a picture posted by Liverpool fan website This Is Anfield on social media showed the wild difference in quality between the current Reds team and the one managed by Sir Kenny Dalglish.
The account posted a team photo from the away leg, which was a miserable affair by all accounts and ended 0-0. Luckily, Dirk Kuyt scored a late winner in the return fixture at Anfield to seal a victory.
Dalglish, who had taken over from the sacked Roy Hodgson midway through the season, fielded a team which included: Jose Reina, Glen Johnson, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Danny Wilson, Jamie Carragher, Fabio Aurelio, Lucas Leiva, Raul Meireles, Maxi Rodriguez, David Ngog, Dirk Kuyt.
Defensive duo Kyrgiakos and Wilson in particular caught the attention of Liverpool fans on social media, some of whom could barely remember the players or the fixture in question.
One Reds fan wrote on X: “Liverpool fans have suffered…what was this team my God.” while another tweeted: “I have no memory of this game.”
