Liverpool fans have claimed Mo Salah was wrongly denied a goal by VAR in the club’s win over Sparta Prague.
In his first appearance since featuring in their win over Brentford last month, Salah came on off the bench to replace Luis Diaz at the Epet Arena.
Within ten minutes of his return Salah had the ball in the back of the net, connecting with a through ball from Dominik Szoboszlai and sweeping his strike beyond Peter Vindahl Jensen.
The goal would have put Liverpool 5-1 up and seen the Egyptian become the first player in Liverpool’s history to have scored more than 20 goals in all competitions in seven successive seasons.
However, a subsequent VAR review ruled that Salah was in an offside position and ruled the goal out.
Mo Salah looked to have netted a record-breaking goal in Liverpool’s win over
Reds supporters on social media questioned the decision and asked why offside lines had not been shown on the broadcast
The decision proved particularly contentious among Reds supporters on social media, with many insisting the video assistant had been mistaken.
Another agreed: ‘I’d love to see the lines on that Salah ‘offside’. He looked on. There have been some dodgy decisions in our European games this season.’
A further fan added: ‘Salah was onside there, and their goal was offside. Don’t really get the lines in this game at all.’
Despite Salah being denied his landmark strike Liverpool would press on in the closing stages in the Czech capital.
In his own return to action, Szoboszlai would add a fifth goal for the Reds, netting in the fourth minute of stoppage time to cap off a dominant performance for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
However, the result was not all positive for the Reds, with Ibrahima Konate hobbling off on the hour mark just days before a clash with Manchester City that could prove pivotal in this season’s title race.
