Michael Edwards sets one condition for shock Liverpool return

Michael Edwards has a single condition if he’s to make a shock return to Liverpool. The Reds want their sporting director back.

Reports on Wednesday are swirling that Liverpool are making another attempt to re-hire Michael Edwards. Edwards left Liverpool in 2022 after nearly a decade at the club, where he grew to become one of football’s most respected sporting directors.

However, it was reported in January that he’d rejected an approach from Liverpool to head back there. Edwards simply wasn’t interested in returning to the stressful world of elite-level football, it seemed.

But now it’s claimed, particularly by Fabrizio Romano, that the Reds are refusing to give up. They want Edwards back and will make another push to convince him.

Liverpool have failed to adequately replace their former director. Julian Ward – essentially Edwards’ no.2 – took over in 2022 but lasted around a year before resigning. That led to Jorg Schmadtke taking the job temporarily but he left in January.

That had brought them back to Edwards – and it appears there is a way to convince him after all. The Times reports that he would take the job but on the condition that he has full control of football operations.

Essentially, Edwards wishes to run the football side of Liverpool Football Club. It is an absolutely massive ask but one that the Reds might just accept.

After all, there’s no better time to give that kind of power to someone. Liverpool are without a sporting director, soon to be without a manager, but have the structure in place that enormous change isn’t needed.

That’s particularly true when Edwards is one of the people most responsible for putting that structure in place.

The next few months promise to be interesting, then. Liverpool are attempting to find their new manager, while also looking for a director to lead their project overall.
