Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk has given his verdict on Caoimhin Kelleher after the Carabao Cup final against Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool won the final against Premier League rivals Chelsea.
So, what has Virgil van Dijk said about his Liverpool teammate Caoimhin Kelleher? Let’s take a look.
Virgil van Dijk praises Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher vs Chelsea
Well, Liverpool beat Premier League rivals Chelsea 1-0 in the final of the Carabao Cup on Sunday evening.
Former Celtic central defender Virgil van Dijk scored the only goal of the match. It came in the 118th minute.
While Van Dijk was a rock at the back for Liverpool, the defender thinks that his teammate Caoimhin Kelleher should have been awarded the Player of the Match award.
The Dutchman has said that the 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper is world class and stepped up his game against Chelsea.
Kelleher made a number of good saves against Chelsea, including a world-class one in the first half.
Van Dijk said about Kelleher, as quoted in The Mirror: “He should have got it. I’m probably one of his biggest fans, I think.
“I have always said he is world class and he stepped up today, again. It’s good to see. He’s a good boy, good goalkeeper and that’s what we need at a club like Liverpool.”
My View: Caoimhin Kelleher at crossroads regarding his future
In my opinion, Caoimhin Kelleher will have a big decision to make in the summer transfer window.
Kelleher is the second-choice goalkeeper at Liverpool. When Alisson is back and available, the Brazil international will take his place in the starting lineup.
At the age of 25, Kelleher needs to start thinking about enhancing his career. Yes, Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world who regularly challenge for major trophies, but he needs to play.
