Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest update on links between Xabi Alonso and Liverpool. Liverpool appear to have taken some steps to figure out how to appoint the Bayer Leverkusen manager to replace Jurgen Klopp. Klopp recently announced that he will step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season and since then we have heard that Alonso’s name has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to take over at Anfield. The Spanish tactician has performed well for Bayer Leverkusen and it is no exaggeration to say that Romano is a big fan of his achievements. He described her as “fantastic” and “amazing” in an exclusive interview with CaughtOffside in his daily news column.
Liverpool will likely need to appoint a sporting director before deciding on their next manager, but Alonso looks set to become a strong contender for the Reds.
However, Romano has identified Bayern Munich as a potential suitor, explaining that Thomas Tuchel’s position can be judged by the team’s current form and that the atmosphere at the club is simply not good.
Bayern Munich have been open and private about their coaching situation and have said they have no intention of sacking Thomas Tuchel. Of course, the club were disappointed after losing 3-0 to Bayer Leverkusen. The performance was poor and the general atmosphere in the club was not what was expected.
“Bayern are not happy about this, but their plans have not changed at the moment,” Romano said.”The current situation is not easy and Tuchel’s situation will certainly be assessed at the end of the season. There are no plans to change things now, but the Bundesliga cannot continue like this, and now that there are Champions League games, naturally there will be internal discussions about the situation. The result of this match will obviously be important in assessing Tuchel’s position. “It’s important to say that the former Bayern Munich player could be a candidate, but that’s not going to happen now and Liverpool are also well aware of Alonso’s situation – they know all about his contract situation at Leverkusen and how they plan to appoint the Spaniard in the summer.
“Liverpool knows very well, but we also have to wait until the Reds appoint a new sporting director and then decide how, when and how to ‘attack’ Alonso’s situation. “Because there is a list of candidates, we also need to know if they will choose another candidate.
It is not just Alonso, but of course Alonso is the main candidate for Liverpool. This is not something that happened today, it is something that they I’ve been thinking for a long time. But again, let’s wait and see what happens with the new director in terms of project direction and new managers. Liverpool are expected to appoint a new director of football ahead of actual negotiations for a new manager. “I don’t think we can rule out other names, but Alonso is a great team coach and would be a great choice for any club.”
