Former midfielder Jason Koumas is considered a fascinating figure in the world of football, with his natural talent not fully apparent and increasingly overlooked. After retirement, Coomas chose to live in the limelight, refusing interviews, expert posts and sponsorship offers, so many people today will have a hard time finding him.
His son Lewis Coomas was released from Liverpool without making his debut to avoid his father’s fate and take a different path.
Although Jason had a successful career elsewhere, he eventually made it to the top. Lewis’ future looks bright given the positive assessment he received from Liverpool youth coach Barry Lutas last year. Leutas praised Lewis’ outstanding play and dedication to the game. “Lewis has been a good player for us. He’s very good. He’s a really energetic front player, he likes to play at the back, he’s aggressive in the game and he has very good technique. He is a very good footballer. “He’s great with kids, has a fantastic personality and works well with them,” Rutas said. Leutas also pointed out that people tend to forget that Kumas is still an U18 player due to his mature style of play.
In the match against Barrow with his senior defenders, Koumas was an absolute asset to Liverpool and a liability to the opposition. His versatility in the forward line and significant improvement throughout the season earned praise from Leutas, who expressed his satisfaction with his performance. His form at U18s led to opportunities at U21s. Koumas scored 10 goals and provided 3 assists in 14 games across both age groups this season. The senior player came agonizingly close to Burnley. With Liverpool struggling with injuries and illness, Jurgen Klopp invited Koumas to first-team training this week and the 18-year-old was on the bench for the Premier League game when the team sheet was released.
Once the result was clear, Klopp gave more nods to his youth players, with Bobby Clarke, James McConnell and the returning Kostas Tsimikas replacing him. But Kumas could not achieve this. However, many believe it’s only a matter of time before Lewis pulls off what Jason couldn’t and delivers a big performance for Liverpool. Hopefully the injury and illness issues will ease next week and Koumas’ chances will diminish, but he is certain to be under Klopp’s watch.
