Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was amazed his club had made history. He described the Anfield road final on the league’s biggest day as “special”, surpassing the number of fans who attended the game against Chelsea in 1949.
A crowd of 59,896 turned up at the Reds’ home ground to watch Liverpool return to top spot with a 3-1 win over Burnley. This was the largest ever attendance for a Premier League match played at Anfield. After the win, Klopp expressed his admiration for Manchester United’s recent rebuilding project. “Brilliant.
God! I saw it before I heard it. It seems special. “It’s really unique,” he said. “This stadium has continued to grow. It’s always been great, but now it’s really great. It’s really great. Very cool. “Really cool at the right time.”He added: “I know it’s a tough game and it’s difficult to stay focused. I spent some time at the main stand, but that’s ok. I’m very happy that [the fans] are back. “It will be a great opportunity for many people to watch this great team play football.”United had hoped to open the new stand in August, but those plans were scuppered when the Buckingham Group, which oversaw the refurbishment, went into administration before the start of the new Premier League season. However, the $101m (£80m/€94m) project was partially launched in December in an effort to gradually increase Anfield’s capacity for Premier League matches against Manchester United and Arsenal.
The Anfield Road End is Fenway Sports Group’s third redevelopment project, following the Main Stand redevelopment in 2016 and the AXA Training Center redevelopment in 2020.
