UEFA has announced that it will significantly increase the amount of prize money in the Champions League from next season. Liverpool are currently trying to qualify for the Premier League this season. The Reds are top of the league, two points ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal, and are also in contention for the league title.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are seven points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Whether fifth place is enough to qualify for next season’s Champions League will depend on how England perform in this season’s European Cup competitions. UEFA confirmed that UEFA has been expanded to 2.1 billion pounds (2.46 billion euros) in the next season of UEFA (2.46 billion euros). This is an increase of 400 million pounds compared to the current indicator, which is 1.7 billion pounds (2.1 billion euros). Liverpool will not be participating in the Champions League this season and will be aiming to win the Europa League instead. Manchester United remain 16th in the competition but have ambitions to challenge European club competition again next season.
Despite this, Liverpool earned £71m from their participation in the Champions League last season and reached the last 16 before losing to Real Madrid. Manchester City earned £115 million by winning the competition for the first time in the club’s history. Next season’s Champions League will be expanded to a new format and the number of teams will increase from 32 to 36 clubs. In the new format, each team will be placed in the same league table, with league stage matches initially decided by a single draw.
Each team will play eight group matches in the tournament. This is up from six over the past few years. The competition’s group stages run from September to January and it remains to be seen how this will affect other competitions in England, such as the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
